Fig. Using a screwdriver, remove the joint boot clamp.

  1. Using a screwdriver, remove the No. 2 front axle inboard joint boot clamp as shown in the illustration. Remove the inboard joint boot clamp using the same procedure as for the No. 2 front axle inboard joint boot clamp.

  3. Separate the inboard joint boot from the inboard joint assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove front drive inboard assembly:


    1. Put matchmarks on the inboard joint assembly and outboard joint shaft. Do not use a punch for the marks.
    2.  
    3. Remove the inboard joint assembly from the outboard joint shaft.
    4.  
    5. Put matchmarks on the outboard joint shaft and tripod joint. Do not use a punch for the marks.
    6.  
    7. Using a snap ring expander, remove the shaft snap ring.
    8.  
    9. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the tripod joint from the outboard joint shaft. Do not tap the roller.

  7. Using pliers, remove the No. 2 front axle outboard joint boot clamp as shown in the illustration. Remove the inboard joint boot clamp using the same procedure as for the No. 2 front axle inboard joint boot clamp.

  9. Remove the outboard joint boot from the outboard joint shaft. Remove the grease from the outboard joint.
  10.  
  11. Using a screwdriver, remove the left front halfshaft snap ring.
  12.  
  13. Using SST 09950-00020 and a press, remove the left halfshaft dust cover. Be careful not to drop the inboard joint assembly.
  14.  
  15. Using a snap ring expander, remove the right halfshaft bearing snap ring. Then using SST 09527-10011 and a press, remove the bearing.
  16.  
  17. Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove the No. 1 front wheel bearing dust deflector.
  18.  

Reassembly:

  1. Using SST 09309-36010, 09502-12010 and a press, install a new No. 1 front wheel bearing dust deflector.
  2.  
  3. Using SST 09710-30021 (09710-03141), 09527-10011 and a steel plate, install a new right front halfshaft bearing.
  4.  
  5. Using a snap ring expander, install a new right halfshaft bearing snap ring.
  6.  
  7. Using steel plate and a press, install a new left halfshaft dust cover.
  8.  
  9. Install a new front halfshaft left hole snap ring.
  10.  
  11. Install the outboard joint boot as follows:
    NOTE
    Before installing the boots, wrap the spline of the halfshaft with vinyl tape to prevent the boots from being damaged.




    1. Hold the halfshaft lightly in a soft vise.
    2.  
    3. Temporarily install a new outboard joint boot to the halfshaft with 2 new clamps.
    4.  
    5. Coat the outboard joint and boot with grease. Grease capacity: 3.7-4.4 oz. (105-125 g).

  13. Install the front axle outboard joint boot clamp as follows:


    1. Hold the halfshaft lightly in a soft vise.
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 outboard joint boot clamps onto the boot.
    4.  
    5. Place SST 09521-24010 onto the outboard joint boot clamp.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the SST so that the outboard joint boot clamp is pinched. Do not overtighten the SST.
    8.  
    9. Using SST 09240-00020, measure the clearance of the outboard joint boot clamp. Clearance: 0.0472-0.1575 inch (1.2-4.0mm). If the measured value is greater than the specified value, retighten the clamp.
    10.

  15. Install the No. 2 front axle outboard joint boot clamp as follows:


    1. Place SST 09521-24010 onto the No. 2 front axle outboard joint boot clamp.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the SST so that the No. 2 front axle outboard joint boot clamp is pinched. Do not overtighten the SST.
    4.  
    5. Using SST 09240-00020, measure the clearance of the No. 2 front axle outboard joint boot clamp. Clearance: 0.0472-0.1575 inch (1.2-4.0mm). If the measured value is greater than the specified value, retighten the clamp.
    6.

  17. Install the front drive inboard joint assembly as follows:


    1. Temporarily install a new inboard joint boot with 2 new clamps to the drive shaft.
    2.  
    3. Align the matchmarks and place the beveled side of the tripod joint axial spline toward the outboard joint shaft.
    4.  
    5. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap the tripod joint into the outboard joint shaft. Do not tap the roller.
    6.  
    7. Using a snap ring expander, install a new shaft snap ring.
    8.  
    9. Coat the outboard joint and boot with grease. Grease capacity: 5.1-5.8 oz. (145-165 g)
    10.  
    11. Align the matchmarks and install the inboard joint assembly to the outboard joint shaft assembly.
    12.

  19. Install the inboard joint boot to the inboard joint assembly.

  23. Using a screwdriver, install the No. 2 front axle inboard joint boot clamp.

  25. Inspect the halfshaft assembly.
