Bushing Replacement



The control arm bushings are serviced with the control arm as an assembly.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel(s)
     
    Caliper, leaving the brake line connected and suspend it out of the way
     

  4.  


WARNING
Never allow the brake caliper to hang freely from the brake hose.



Rotor
 
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and harness
 
Tie rod end from the arm on the lower ball joint
 
Cotter pin and nut. Disconnect the upper control arm from the steering knuckle.
 
Cotter pin and nut. Disconnect the steering knuckle from the lower control arm.
 
Steering knuckle and ball joint assembly from the vehicle
 
2 ball joint mounting bolts, then remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle
 

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint and tighten the bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm)
     
    Steering knuckle to the lower and upper suspension arms. Tighten the lower control arm nut to 95 ft. lbs. (127 Nm) and install a new cotter pin. Tighten the upper control arm to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Tie rod end to the ball joint arm. Tighten the nut to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Rotor
     
    Caliper
     
    ABS speed sensor and harness. Tighten the sensor retaining bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Wheel(s)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check the front wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist, so that front suspension components are hanging and accessible.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels.
     
    Engine under covers.
     
    Brake caliper(s); Do NOT disconnect the brake hose; hang the caliper without stress on the hose
     
    Tie rod end from steering knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar link from stabilizer bar
     
    Height control sensor link, if equipped, from shock absorber bracket
     
    Shock absorber lower mount
     
    Lower control arm set bolts (loosen only)
     
    Lower ball joint from No. 2 lower control arm (lower suspension arm)
     
    Steering gear assembly
     
    Strut bar bracket
     
    No. 1 lower control arm (lower suspension arm); matchmark adjusting cam to crossmember
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure, noting the following torque settings:

    No. 1 lower control arm (lower suspension arm) bolt to shock absorber bracket: 44 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
     
    No. 1 lower control arm (lower suspension arm) adjusting cam bolt and nut to crossmember: 127 ft. lbs. (172 Nm)
     
    Strut bar bracket bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
     
    Strut bar bracket nut: 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm)
     
    No. 2 lower control arm (lower suspension arm) nuts: 122 ft. lbs. (164 Nm)
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting bolt and nut: 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar link nut: 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar link-to-stabilizer bar bolt and nut: 43 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end nut: 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm)
     
    Brake caliper bolts: 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm)
     
    Front wheel nuts: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Engine under covers
     
    Loosen 2 bolts on the suspension lower arm
     
    Shock absorber from mounting bracket
     
    Height control sensor
     
    Front stabilizer link
     
    Separate rack and pinion gear assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Remove front suspension lower arm
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Ball joint cotter pin and bolt
     
    Lower ball joint from the lower arm assembly
     
    Shock absorber bracket
     
    Lower arm assembly
     

  8.  
  9. Matchmark the front and rear adjustment cams to the body and then remove the nuts and adjusting cams.
  10.  
  11. Lift out the lower control arm.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber bracket. Torque: 44 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
     
    Lower control arm to the body and temporarily install the adjusting cams and nuts. Do NOT tighten the nuts at this time.
     
    Lower control arm to the knuckle and tighten the ball joint nut to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
     
    2 bolts on lower suspension arm to 121 ft. lbs. (164 Nm)
     
    Rack and pinion steering gear assembly nuts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Front stabilizer link bolts and nuts (to stabilizer bar) to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm) and (to stabilizer link) to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm)
     
    Shock absorber assembly bolt to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm)
     
    Height control sensor
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment
  4.  
  5. Adjust height control sensor
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Never allow the brake caliper to hang freely from the brake hose.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel(s)
     
    Caliper, leaving the brake line connected and suspend it out of the way.
     



    Rotor
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and harness
     
    Tie rod end from the arm on the lower ball joint
     
    Cotter pin and nut. Disconnect the upper control arm from the steering knuckle.
     
    Cotter pin and nut. Disconnect the steering knuckle from the lower control arm.
     
    Steering knuckle and ball joint assembly from the vehicle.
     
    2 ball joint mounting bolts, then remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint and tighten the bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
     
    Steering knuckle to the lower and upper suspension arms. Tighten the lower control arm nut to 95 ft. lbs. (127 Nm) and install a new cotter pin. Tighten the upper control arm to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Tie rod end to the ball joint arm. Tighten the nut to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Rotor
     
    Caliper
     
    ABS speed sensor and harness. Tighten the sensor retaining bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Wheel(s)
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Check the front wheel alignment.
  4.  

The lower ball joint is not replaceable. If the lower ball joint is defective, replace the lower arm and ball joint as an assembly, as follows:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on safety stands.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel and the engine undercover
     
    Caliper support bracket from the vehicle by removing the 2 bolts. Support the caliper and bracket with a wire. Do not let the assembly hang from the brake line.
     
    Nut and disconnect the stabilizer bar from the lower control arm.
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint. Press the lower ball joint out of the steering knuckle.
     
    Lower end of the strut by removing the nut and bolt.
     
    Nut, 2 bolts and the front lower arm bracket stay
     

  6.  
  7. Matchmark the front and rear adjustment cams to the body and then remove the nuts and adjusting cams.
  8.  
  9. Lift out the lower control arm.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bracket to the lower control arm by installing the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
     
    Lower control arm to the body and temporarily install the adjusting cams and nuts. Do not tighten the nuts at this time.
     
    Lower control arm to the knuckle and tighten the ball joint nut to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
     
    Strut to the arm and tighten the bolt and nut to 106 ft. lbs. (143 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link and tighten the nut to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper support bracket to the vehicle and tighten the bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm.
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Bounce it several times to set the suspension.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower arm, align the matchmarks on the adjusting cams and tighten the nuts to 166 ft. lbs. (226 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check the wheel alignment.
  10.
