Upper Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



The control arm bushings are serviced with the control arm as an assembly.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen the 3 upper strut mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Loosen, but do not remove, the upper strut rod nut.
  8.  


CAUTION
Do NOT completely remove the upper strut nut at this time.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake caliper, leaving the line attached and secure it out of the way
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and harness
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the upper control arm
     
    Upper control arm from the steering knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar from the link and remove the bracket
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the lower control arm
     
    Strut from the lower suspension arm
     
    3 upper strut mounting nuts and remove the strut
     
    Mounting bolts holding the upper control arm to the frame
     
    Upper control arm from the vehicle
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper suspension arm and tighten the mounting bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm)
     
    Strut and tighten the upper retaining nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm). Tighten the new upper strut rod nut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Strut to the lower arm and temporarily tighten the nut and bolt
     
    Stabilizer bar bracket and tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar to the link and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Upper suspension arm to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    ABS speed sensor and tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Caliper
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Bounce the vehicle several times to stabilize the suspension.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the lower strut bolt and nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle or raise vehicle on a hoist.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel(s).
  4.  
  5. Remove the front strut and coil spring assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 bolts and remove the upper control arm.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm into position and install the 2 retaining bolts. Torque the bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the front strut and coil spring assembly
  4.  
  5. Install the front wheel(s). Torque the wheel nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Strut or if equipped with air suspension, remove the pneumatic cylinder
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor wire harness from the upper control arm by removing the bolt.
     
    Mounting bolts holding the upper control arm to the vehicle
     
    Upper control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm and tighten the 2 mounting bolts to (except SC 430) 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm), or (SC 430) 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm)
     
    ABS speed sensor wire harness to the upper control arm with the attaching bolt
     
    Strut, or if equipped with air suspension, install the pneumatic cylinder
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen the 3 upper strut mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Loosen, but do not remove, the upper strut rod nut.
    CAUTION
    DO NOT completely remove the upper strut nut at this time.

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake caliper, leaving the line attached and secure it out of the way
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and harness
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the upper control arm
     
    Upper control arm from the steering knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar from the link and remove the bracket
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the lower control arm
     
    Strut from the lower suspension arm
     
    3 upper strut mounting nuts and remove the strut
     
    Mounting bolts holding the upper control arm to the frame
     
    Upper control arm from the vehicle.
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper suspension arm and tighten the mounting bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
     
    Strut and tighten the upper retaining nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm). Tighten the new upper strut rod nut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Strut to the lower arm and temporarily tighten the nut and bolt.
     
    Stabilizer bar bracket and tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar to the link and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Upper suspension arm to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    ABS speed sensor and tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Caliper
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Bounce the vehicle several times to stabilize the suspension.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the lower strut bolt and nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on safety stands.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Caliper support bracket by removing the 2 bolts. Leave the brake line connected and suspend it aside.
     
    Rotor
     
    Front fender splash shield, fender liner and wheel opening molding.
     
    On the left side, the washer tank
     
    Bolt and disconnect the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor from the steering knuckle. Remove the 3 bolts and disconnect the wire harness clamp.
     
    Cotter pin and the nut from the upper ball joint; press the upper ball joint from the knuckle.
     
    Through-bolt, nut and the upper control arm.
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The upper control arm mounting bolts are not tightened until the suspension has been assembled and vehicle is on the ground.



    Upper control arm. Connect the upper control arm to the subframe and install the through-bolt. Do not tighten the bolt at this time.
     



    Ball joint to the knuckle and tighten the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
     
    Wire harness and ABS speed sensor. Tighten the speed sensor to knuckle bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Washer tank, the fender liner, splash shield and molding.
     
    Rotor
     
    Caliper support bracket and tighten the bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Bounce the suspension several times to set the suspension.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower arm and tighten the upper control arm through-bolt and nut to 121 ft. lbs. (164 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
