Timing Check

  1. Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
    NOTE
    A warmed up engine should have an engine coolant temperature of over 80°C (176°F), have an engine oil temperature of 60°C (140°F), and the engine rpm should be stabilized.

  2.  
  3. Connect the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool to the DLC3. Please refer to the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool operator-s manual for further details.
  4.  
  5. Connect the timing light to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Check the engine idle speed.

  9. Using SST 09843-18020, connect terminals TC and E1 of the DLC1.
  10.  
  11. Connect the timing light clip to the white lead wire. Use a timing light that can detect the primary signal.

  13. Using the timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).

  15. Remove the SST from the DLC1.
  16.  
  17. Further check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 6-16°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position). The timing mark moves in a range between 6° and 16°.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool.
  22.  

  1. Warm up the engine and stop the engine.
    NOTE
    A warmed up engine should have an engine coolant temperature of over 80°C (176°F), have an engine oil temperature of 60°C (140°F), and the engine rpm should be stabilized.

  3. When using the intelligent tester, perform the following:


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2.  
    3. Start the engine and idle it.
    4.  
    5. Push the intelligent tester main switch ON.
    6.  
    7. Enter the following items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data list / IGN Advance.
    8.  
    9. Ignition timing should measure 5-15°BTDC at idle.
      NOTE
      Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.

  5. When not using the intelligent tester, perform the following:


    1. Remove the V-bank cover sub-assembly.
    2.  
    3. Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the wire of the ignition connector for No. 1 cylinder. Use a timing light which can detect the first signal.

    5. Using SST 09843-18040, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3.
      CAUTION
      Confirm the terminal numbers before connecting them. Connecting the wrong terminals can damage the engine. When checking the ignition timing, the transmission should be in neutral.

    7. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC at idle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the SST from the DLC3.
    10.  
    11. Check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 5-15°BTDC at idle.
    12.  
    13. Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased.
    14.  
    15. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
    16.  
    17. Install the V-bank cover sub-assembly.

  1. Remove the V-bank cover.
  2.  

  1. Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
    NOTE
    A warmed up engine should have an engine coolant temperature of over 80°C (176°F), have an engine oil temperature of 60°C (140°F), and the engine rpm should be stabilized.

  3. Remove the fuse cover on the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Connect a LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool to the DLC3. Please refer to the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool operator-s manual for further details.

  7. Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the yellow lead wire of the ignition coil connector for No.1 cylinder.

  9. Using SST 09843-18020, connect terminals TC and E1 of the DLC1.

  11. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC at idle (Transmission in neutral position).

  13. Remove the SST from the DLC1.
    1. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
    2.

  15. Disconnect the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool.
    1. Install the V-bank cover.
    2.

  1. Remove the V-bank cover.
  2.  

  1. Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.

  3. When using LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool, perform the following:


    1. Connect a LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool to the DLC3. Please refer to the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool operator-s manual for further details.

    3. Start the engine at idle.
    4.  
    5. Check the ignition timing. The ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).
    6.  
    7. Disconnect a LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool from the DLC3.

  5. When not using LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool, perform the following:


    1. Connect tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector.

    3. Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the yellow lead wire of the ignition coil connector for No.1 cylinder.

    5. Using SST 09843-18020, connect terminals TC and E1 of the DLC1.
    6.  
    7. Start the engine at idle.
    8.  
    9. Check the ignition timing. The ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).
    10.  
    11. Remove the SST from the DLC1.
    12.  
    13. Remove the timing light from the engine.
    14.  
    15. Remove the tachometer.
    16.

  7. Install the V-bank cover.
  8.  

  1. Warm up the engine and stop the engine.
    NOTE

  3. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
  4.  
  5. Enter DATA LIST MODE on the intelligent tester. Please refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.
  6.  
  7. Start and idle the engine.
  8.  
  9. Check the ignition timing. The ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Shift lever on N).
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the intelligent tester from the DLC3.

  3. Connect the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool to the DLC3. Please refer to the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool operator-s manual for further details.

  5. Connect the timing light to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Check the engine idle speed.

  9. Using SST 09843-18020, connect terminals TC and E1 of the DLC1.
  10.  
  11. Connect the timing light clip to the white lead wire. Use a timing light that can detect the primary signal.

  13. Using the timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).
  14.  
  15. Remove the SST from the DLC1.
  16.  
  17. Further check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 6-16°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position). The timing mark moves in a range between 6° and 16°.

  19. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool.

  1. Remove the battery clamp cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner inlet.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 cap nuts, 2 bolts and V-bank cover.
  6.  
  7. Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
  8.  
  9. Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Please refer to the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool operator-s manual for further details.
  10.  
  11. Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the yellow lead wire of the ignition coil connector for No.1 cylinder.
  12.  
  13. Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approx. 90 seconds.
  14.  
  15. Check the idle speed. Idle speed should measure 700-800 rpm.
  16.  
  17. Using SST 09843-18020, connect terminals TC and E1 of the DLC1.
  18.  
  19. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).
  20.  
  21. Remove the SST 09843-18020 from the DLC1.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool.
  26.  
  27. Install the V-bank cover.
  28.  
  29. Install the air cleaner inlet.
  30.  
  31. Install the battery clamp cover.
  32.  

  1. Warm up the engine and stop the engine.
    NOTE

  3. Connect a hand-held tester to the DLC3.
  4.  
  5. Enter DATA LIST MODE on the hand-held tester. Please refer to the hand-held tester operator-s manual for further details.
  6.  
  7. Start and idle the engine.
  8.  
  9. Check the ignition timing. The ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Shift lever on N).
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the hand-held tester from the DLC3.
