Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait 90 seconds before doing any further work while the airbag system de-energizes.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
     
    Torx®bolt covers at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    Loosen the Torx®bolts (using a Torx®wrench), until the circumference ring on the bolt catches on the screw case
     
    Lift the air bag, disconnect the electrical connector and remove it
     
    Steering wheel nut and press the steering wheel from the steering column
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument panel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Front pillar garnishes and the front door scuff plates
     
    Steering column cover screws and the covers
     
    Electrical connectors and remove the combination switch
     
    End pad
     
    2 No. 1 undercover-to-instrument panel screws and the undercover
     
    2 hood lock release screws and the release
     
    4 No. 1 safety pad-to-instrument panel bolts, screw and the safety pad
     
    Parking brake handle and the No. 1 switch hole base
     
    4 steering column-to-instrument panel nuts, disconnect the spring from the brake pedal and remove the steering column
     
    Instrument cluster finish panel using a suitable prytool
     
    4 instrument cluster-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the instrument cluster
     
    No. 2 undercover using a suitable prytool
     
    Plate and disconnect the air bag electrical connector inside the glove box
     
    Glove box-to-instrument panel 2 bolts, 3 screws, and the glove box
     
    3 CD changer-to-instrument panel nuts, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the CD changer
     
    Ashtray
     
    No. 2 register using a suitable prytool and disconnect the connector
     
    Audio unit-to-instrument panel 2 bolts, 2 screws and the audio unit
     
    Cluster finish panel using a suitable prytool, disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
     
    Console box carpet
     
    Lower rear console box
     
    Rear console armrest
     
    No. 3 console box mounting bracket
     
    Console box
     
    No. 1 console box duct
     
    No. 7 heater-to-register
     
    5 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts, the nut, the screw and the instrument panel
     
    No. 1 and No. 2 brace
     
    Reinforcement-to-chassis 5 nuts, 4 bolts and the reinforcement
     
    Ventilation nozzles from the heater/air conditioning housing

To install:

  1. Install the instrument by installing or connecting the following:

    Ventilation nozzles to the heater/air conditioning housing
     
    Reinforcement and the reinforcement-to-chassis 5 nuts and 4 bolts
     
    No. 1 and No. 2 brace
     
    Instrument panel and the 5 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts, the nut and the screw
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    No. 7 heater-to-register
     
    No. 1 console box duct
     
    Console box
     
    No. 3 console box mounting bracket
     
    Rear console armrest
     
    Lower rear console box
     
    Console box carpet
     
    Connectors and install the cluster finish panel
     
    Audio unit and the audio unit-to-instrument panel 2 bolts and 2 screws
     
    Connector and install the No. 2 register
     
    Ashtray
     
    CD changer, connect the electrical connectors and install the 3 CD changer-to-instrument panel nuts
     
    Glove box and the glove box-to-instrument panel 2 bolts and 3 screws
     
    Air bag electrical connector and install the plate inside the glove box
     
    No. 2 undercover
     
    Instrument cluster, connect the electrical connectors and install the 4 instrument cluster-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Instrument cluster finish panel
     
    Steering column, connect the spring to the brake pedal and install the 4 steering column-to-instrument panel nuts
     
    Parking brake handle and the No. 1 switch hole base
     
    No. 1 safety pad and the 4 safety pad-to-instrument panel bolts and screw
     
    Hood lock release and the 2 release screws
     
    No. 1 undercover and the 2 undercover-to-instrument panel screws
     
    End pad
     
    Combination switch and connect the electrical connectors
     
    Steering column covers and the cover screws
     
    Front pillar garnishes and the front door scuff plates
     

  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel by installing or connecting the following:

    Steering wheel and torque the steering wheel nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    Electrical connector and install the air bag
     
    Tighten the Torx®bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9.0 Nm) using a Torx®wrench
     
    Torx®bolt covers at both sides of the steering wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Set radio receiver assembly to shipment mode as follows:
    1. Be sure that all discs and tapes have been removed from the unit.
    2.  
    3. Be sure that the engine switch off.
    4.  
    5. While simultaneously pressing the "SEEK UP" and "DISC" switches, turn the engine switch on (ACC).
      NOTE
      The CD loading door indicator light blinks during mode setting and it remains lit after the setting is completed.

    6.  
    7. Turn the engine switch off.
    8.  

  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait 90 seconds before doing any further work while the airbag system de-energizes.
  6.  
  7. Align the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left and right front door scuff plates.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left and right front door opening trim covers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower No. 2 and No. 3 steering wheel covers using a screwdriver. Tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering wheel airbag assembly as follows:
    1. Using a "torx" socket wrench (T30), loosen the 2 "torx" screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    2.  
    3. Pull out the steering wheel airbag from the steering wheel assembly and support the airbag carefully with one hand.
      WARNING
      When removing the steering airbag, do not pull the airbag wire harness.

    4.  
    5. Disconnect the horn connector.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the 2 connectors from the steering airbag.
      WARNING
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    8.  
    9. Remove the steering wheel airbag.
    10.

  17. Remove the steering wheel assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
    2.  
    3. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
    4.  
    5. Using a steering wheel puller tool, remove the steering wheel assembly.
    6.

  19. Remove the steering column cover as follows:
    1. Remove the 3 retaining screws.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the 2 claws to remove the lower steering column cover.
      WARNING
      Be careful not to damage the tilt and telescopic switch.

    4.  
    5. Disengage the 4 clips to separate the steering column cover upper.
    6.  
    7. Disengage the claw to remove the upper steering column cover.

  21. Remove the headlight dimmer switch as follows:
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Detach the clamp (looks like a hose clamp) from the headlight dimmer switch using a set of pliers.
    4.  
    5. Disengage the claw and remove the headlight dimmer switch.

  23. Remove the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly (3UZ-FE) as follows:
    WARNING
    Make sure that the steering link assembly is centered before performing this step.

    1. Loosen upper bolt and remove lower bolt, then slide the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.
      NOTE
      Do not remove the upper bolt. Do not separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering link assembly.

    2.  
    3. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the power steering link assembly.
    4.  
    5. Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering link assembly.
    6.  
    7. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the steering actuator assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the steering actuator assembly.
    10.

  25. Separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly (3GR-FSE with 2WD) as follows:
    1. Loosen the upper bolt and remove the lower bolt, then slide the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
      NOTE
      Do not remove the upper bolt. Do not disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.

    2.  
    3. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the power steering link assembly.
    4.  
    5. Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering link assembly.
    6.  
    7. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
    10.

  27. Separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly (3GR-FSE with AWD) as follows:
    1. Remove the bolt, and then slide the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
      NOTE
      Do not separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.

    3. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering link assembly.
    4.  
    5. Separate the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.

  29. Separate steering actuator assembly (3UZ-FE) as follows:
    1. Disconnect the connector and separate the wire harness clamp from the steering actuator assembly.
    2.  
    3. Put matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the main shaft.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bolt and separate the steering actuator assembly.
    6.

  31. Remove the steering column assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the bolt and separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2 (3GR-FSE engine).
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column assembly.

  33. Remove the multi-display with radio receiver assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the 4 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Pull the multi-display with radio receiver to detach the 2 clips on the backside of the multi-display.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect each connector and remove the multi-display.

  35. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the 27 clamps and connectors, and then disconnect the wire harness.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 3 nuts, 2 bolts and 2 junction blocks.
    4.  
    5. Remove the cap and bolt.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 6 bolts and 2 screws.
    8.  
    9. Using a T40 "torx" socket, remove the 5 "torx" bolts.
    10.  
    11. Using a 12 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 2 collars and instrument panel reinforcement.

To install:

  1. Install the instrument panel reinforcement assembly and torque the fasteners as follows:
    1. On the driver side, use a T40 "torx" socket. Install the instrument panel reinforcement with the 3 "torx" bolts and torque to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
    2.  
    3. On the passenger side, use a 12 mm hexagon wrench. Install the instrument panel reinforcement with the 2 bolts and torque to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
    4.  
    5. On the passenger side, use a T40 "torx" socket. Install the instrument panel reinforcement with the 2 "torx" bolts and torque tp 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the instrument panel reinforcement with the 6 bolts and 2 screws.
    8.  
    9. Install the bolt and cap.
    10.  
    11. Connect the 2 connectors and attach the 27 clamps.
    12.  
    13. Install the 2 junction blocks with the 2 bolts and 3 nuts.

  3. Install the steering column assembly as follows:
    1. Install the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly (3GR-FSE).
    2.  
    3. Install the steering column assembly with the 4 nuts. Torque the 4 nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly.
    6.  
    7. Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke assembly and power steering link assembly.
    8.  
    9. Install the bolt and torque to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    10.  

  4.  
  5. Connect steering actuator assembly (3UZ-FE) as follows:
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the main shaft.
    2.  
    3. Install the bolt and torque to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

      Steering main shaft lower dust cover (3UZ-FE)
       
      No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly (3GR-FSE). Torque the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
       
      Steering sliding yoke sub-assembly (3GR-FSE with 2WD and 3UZ-FE). Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
       
      No. 1 air duct

  7. Adjust the spiral cable as follows:


    1. Check that the engine switch is off.
    2.  
    3. Check that the battery negative (-) terminal is disconnected.
      WARNING
      After removing the terminal, wait for at least 90 seconds before starting the operation.

    4.  
    5. Rotate the spiral cable with steering sensor counterclockwise slowly by hand until it feels firm. Do not turn it by the wiring harness.
    6.  
    7. Rotate the spiral cable with steering sensor clockwise approximately 2.5 turns to align the marks.
      NOTE
      The spiral cable with steering sensor will rotate approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.



      Steering column covers
       
      Steering wheel. Torque the steering wheel bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
       
      Steering wheel airbag. Torque the screws to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
       
      The lower No. 2 and No. 3 steering wheel covers
       
      Left and right front door opening trim covers
       
      Left and right front door scuff plates

  9. Perform system initialization procedure.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait 90 seconds before doing any further work while the airbag system de-energizes.
  4.  
  5. Tilt down and pull out the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front assist grips.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front pillar garnishes.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front scuff plates.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering wheel.
    NOTE
    The steering wheel pad should be placed with the pad top surface facing up.

  15. Remove the steering column cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shift lever knob by sliding the shaft collar downward and removing the 2 screws.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper console panel rear as follows:


    1. Open the ash tray lid.
    2.  
    3. Lift the console panel toward you.
    4.  
    5. Pass your finger in the shift lever groove and pull the console panel upward away from you.
    6.  
    7. Remove the panel.

  21. Remove the upper console panel as follows:


    1. Open the cup holder lid and pull up the holder. Do not pull the lid.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 6 screws and pry out of the upper console panel.
    4.  
    5. Remove cup holder from upper console panel.

  23. Remove the radio with A/C control assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the No. 2 under cover as follows:


    1. Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips.
    2.  
    3. Pull the cover to remove it.

  27. Disconnect the airbag connector as follows:


    1. Remove the glove compartment door finish plate inside the instrument panel box.
      NOTE
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    2.  
    3. Remove the connector from the glove compartment door finish plate.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    6.

  29. Remove the glove compartment assembly as follows:


    1. Remove the clip.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 caps.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 4 screws and glove compartment assembly.
    6.

  31. Remove the 4 bolts and the right lower finish panel.
  32.  
  33. Remove the screw and No. 4 heater-to-register duct.

    1. Remove the 3 bolts and 2 nuts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front passenger airbag assembly.
      CAUTION
      Do not store the front passenger airbag assembly with the airbag deployment direction facing down.

  37. Remove the 4 screws first then, using a screwdriver, remove the No. 1 under cover. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

  39. Remove the console box as follows:


    1. Remove the box bottom mat.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 3 bolts, 5 screws and console box.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 3 screws and console compartment door.
    6.  
    7. Remove the rear console lower box.
    8.

  41. Using a screwdriver, pry out the end panel and remove it. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
  42.  
  43. Remove the key cylinder plate. Using a screwdriver, pry out the center panel and remove it. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
  44.  
  45. Remove the 2 screws and the engine hood release lever. Disconnect the release cable from the lever.
  46.  
  47. Remove the No. 1 lower finish panel as follows:


    1. Remove the 3 screws.
    2.  
    3. Remove the panel, then disconnect the connectors.
    4.  

  48.  
  49. Remove the 4 bolts and the left lower finish panel.
  50.  
  51. Remove the No. 2 heater-to-register duct.
  52.  
  53. Remove the combination switch.

  55. Using a screwdriver, remove the cluster finish panel. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

  57. Remove the combination meter.
  58.  
  59. Remove the steering column assembly.

  61. Remove the instrument panel assembly as follows:


    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 bolts from the wire harness.
    4.  
    5. Using a clip remover, remove 2 clips.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts from the instrument panel.
    8.  
    9. Pull the instrument panel rearward, remove the instrument panel.

  63. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement as follows:


    1. Using a clip remover, remove the clip and the No. 3 heater to register duct.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt, 2 nuts and the instrument panel No. 1 brace.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 bolts and mounting base.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 7 bolts and 3 nuts.
    8.  
    9. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement.
    10.

To install:

  1. Install the instrument panel reinforcement as follows:


    1. Place the instrument panel reinforcement into position.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the 7 bolts and 3 nuts.
    4.  
    5. Install the mounting base and 2 bolts.
    6.  
    7. Install the instrument panel No. 1 brace with the bolt and 2 nuts.
    8.  
    9. Install the No. 3 heater-to-register duct and engage the clip.
    10.  

  2.  
  3. Install the instrument panel assembly as follows:


    1. Position the instrument panel and push it forward.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the 2 bolts and 2 nuts to the instrument panel.
    4.  
    5. Engage the 2 clips.
    6.  
    7. Install the 2 bolts to the wire harness.
    8.  
    9. Connect the connectors.
    10.  

  4.  
  5. Install the steering column assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the combination meter.
  8.  
  9. Install the cluster finish panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the combination switch.
  12.  
  13. Install the No. 2 heater-to-register duct.
  14.  
  15. Install the left lower finish panel and 4 bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install the No. 1 lower finish panel.
  18.  
  19. Connect the engine hood release cable to the lever and tighten the 2 screws.
  20.  
  21. Install the center panel and key cylinder plate.
  22.  
  23. Install the end panel.
  24.  
  25. Install the console box.
  26.  
  27. Install the front passenger airbag assembly as follows:


    1. Install the front passenger airbag assembly into position.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the 3 bolts and 2 nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)..
      NOTE
      At the time of installation, make sure the passenger airbag assembly is installed to the specified torque. If the airbag assembly has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the airbag assembly with a new one. Take care that the wiring does not interfere with other parts is not pinched between other parts.

  29. Install the No. 4 heater-to-register duct.

  31. Install the right lower finish panel.
  32.  
  33. Install the glove compartment assembly.
  34.  
  35. Connect the passenger airbag connector.
  36.  
  37. Install the No. 2 under cover.

  39. Install the radio with A/C control assembly.
  40.  
  41. Install the upper console panel.
  42.  
  43. Install the upper console panel rear.
  44.  
  45. Install the shift lever knob.
  46.  
  47. Install the steering column cover.
  48.  
  49. Install the steering wheel.
  50.  
  51. Install the front scuff plates.
  52.  
  53. Install the front pillar garnishes.
  54.  
  55. Install the front assist grips.
  56.  
  57. Connect the negative battery cable.
  58.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Set CD changer to ship mode setting using following procedure
    NOTE
    When mode setting is complete -Ship- appears on the display



    Remove all CDs
     
    Simultaneously press -Seek Up- and -Disc- while turning the ignition switch to -Acc-

  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait 90 seconds before doing any further work while the airbag system de-energizes.

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center front wheels and steering wheel
     
    Lower steering wheel cover
     
    Switch & volume case
     
    Steering pad switch modulator
     
    Horn button assembly
     
    Steering wheel assembly
     
    RH & LH door scuff plates
     
    RH & LH door opening trim covers
     
    Instrument panel safety pad. LH side under steering column
     
    Instrument cluster finish panel
     
    Upper and lower steering column covers
     
    Turn signal switch assembly
     
    Combination meter assembly
     
    Upper/Rear shift console garnish panel
     
    Shift console panel sub-assembly upper
     
    Air conditioning control assembly
     
    Instrument cluster radio finish panel assembly lower center
     
    Instrument panel safety pad garnish sub-assembly
     
    Instrument panel garnish sub-assembly No. 2
     
    Instrument cluster finish panel sub-assembly center
     
    Instrument panel under cover sub-assembly No. 2
     
    Console glove box carpet
     
    Console glove box panel No. 3
     
    Console glove box assembly
     
    Instrument panel brace sub-assembly No. 2
     
    Instrument panel brace sub-assembly No. 1
     
    RH & LH front pillar garnish
     
    Instrument side panel
     
    Instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly
     
    3 bolts and separate air bag sensor assembly center
     
    Heater to register duct No. 2

    Instrument panel garnish sub-assembly No. 2
     
    Instrument panel safety pad garnish sub-assembly
     
    Instrument cluster radio finish assembly lower center
     
    Air conditioning control assembly
     
    Shift console panel sub-assembly upper
     
    Upper/Rear shift console garnish panel
