Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Rear tire and wheel assembly
     
    Brake caliper support from the rear axle carrier and support it with a piece of wire
     

  4.  
  5. Place matchmarks on the disc brake rotor and the axle hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake rotor
     
    Speed sensor
     
    Rear halfshaft
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Strut rod
     

  8.  
  9. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and rear control crossmember.

    Nut, adjusting cam and the washer to the No. 1 control arm
     
    No. 1 lower control arm from the crossmember
     
    Loosen the nut holding the lower control arm to the axle carrier
     
    No. 2 lower control arm from the axle carrier
     
    Nut, then remove the No. 2 lower control arm from the axle carrier
     
    Nut holding the upper control arm to the axle carrier
     
    Axle carrier
     
    Nut holding the No. 1 control arm to the axle carrier
     
    No. 1 lower control arm from the axle carrier
     
    Dust deflector
     
    Axle hub from the carrier
     
    Backing plate
     
    Inner race (outside)
     
    Oil seal
     
    Snapring
     
    Bearing
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing to the axle carrier
     

  2.  


NOTE
If the inner races come loose from the bearing outer race, be sure to install them on the same side as before.



Snapring. Install the inner race (outside) and a new oil seal.
 
Backing plate. Install the inner race (inside) and press in the axle hub with the proper tools.
 
Inner oil seal. Align the holes for the speed sensor in the dust deflector and axle carrier. Install the dust deflector.

No. 1 lower arm to the axle carrier and install a new nut. Tighten the nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
 
Upper control arm to the axle carrier. Tighten the new nut and bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (109 Nm).
 
No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier and tighten a new nut to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm)
 
No. 1 lower control arm to the rear crossmember. Tighten the nut to 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm).
 
Strut rod to the axle carrier. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 134 ft. lbs. (184 Nm).
 
Parking brake cable and slide the backing plate to the inside. Install the hex bolt and tighten it to 132 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
 
Shoe guide plate set bolt. Tighten the bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
 
4 hub bolts and tighten them to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
 
Bolts at the speed sensor and tighten them to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
 
Parking brake shoes
 
Halfshafts. Apply the brakes and tighten the locknut to 213 ft. lbs. (289 Nm).
 
Brake rotor
 
Brake caliper support to the rear axle carrier. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
 
Rear tire and wheel assembly
 
Negative battery cable
 

  1. Lower the vehicle and bounce it a few times to stabilize the suspension.
  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear tire and wheel assembly
     
    Brake caliper support bracket
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Speed sensor
     
    Rear halfshaft
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    2 bolts at the parking brake cable. Remove the 2 hub bolts and the hex bolt. Slide the backing plate to the outside and disconnect the parking brake cable.
     
    Strut rod at the axle carrier
     
    Nut, then press out the upper suspension arm.
     
    Nut, then press out the No. 2 lower suspension arm
     
    Axle carrier
     
    Dust deflector and pull out the oil seal
     
    Axle hub from the carrier
     
    Backing plate
     
    Inner race (outside) from the hub
     
    Oil seal
     
    Snapring
     
    Bearing and inner race (inside)
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing to the axle carrier
     

  2.  


NOTE
If the inner races come loose from the bearing outer race, be sure to install them on the same side as before.



Snapring, the inner race (outside) and a new oil seal
 
Backing plate. Install the inner race (inside) and press in the axle hub with the proper tools.
 
New dust deflector
 
Upper arm to the axle carrier. Tighten the nut and bolt to 65 ft. lbs (88 Nm), rear 55 ft. lbs (74 Nm)
 
No. 2 lower arm to the carrier and tighten a new nut to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
 
Toe control link with camber adjusting cams. Tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Stabilize and retighten to 44 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
 
Rear drive shaft assembly
 
Parking brake cable and brake assembly
 
Install the parking brake shoes and the ABS sensor.
 
Brake rotor
 
Brake caliper to the rear axle carrier by installing the 2 bolts.
 
Tighten rear suspension arm assembly to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
 

  1. Inspect and adjust to rear alignment
  2.  
  3. Perform speed sensor signal check.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Rear tire and wheel assembly
     
    Brake caliper support from the rear axle carrier and support it with a piece of wire.
     

  4.  
  5. Place matchmarks on the disc brake rotor and the axle hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake rotor
     
    Speed sensor
     
    Rear halfshaft
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Strut rod
     

  8.  
  9. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and rear control crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut, adjusting cam and the washer to the No. 1 control arm.
     
    No. 1 lower control arm from the crossmember.
     
    Loosen the nut holding the lower control arm to the axle carrier.
     
    No. 2 lower control arm from the axle carrier.
     
    Nut, then remove the No. 2 lower control arm from the axle carrier.
     
    Nut holding the upper control arm to the axle carrier.
     
    Axle carrier
     
    Nut holding the No. 1 control arm to the axle carrier
     
    No. 1 lower control arm from the axle carrier
     
    Dust deflector.
     
    Axle hub from the carrier
     
    Backing plate
     
    Inner race (outside)
     
    Oil seal
     
    Snapring
     
    Bearing
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    If the inner races come loose from the bearing outer race, be sure to install them on the same side as before.



    Bearing to the axle carrier
     



    Snapring. Install the inner race (outside) and a new oil seal.
     
    Backing plate. Install the inner race (inside) and press in the axle hub with the proper tools.
     
    Inner oil seal. Align the holes for the speed sensor in the dust deflector and axle carrier. Install the dust deflector.

    No. 1 lower arm to the axle carrier and install a new nut. Tighten the nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
     
    Upper control arm to the axle carrier. Tighten the new nut and bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (109 Nm).
     
    No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier and tighten a new nut to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
     
    No. 1 lower control arm to the rear crossmember. Tighten the nut to 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm).
     
    Strut rod to the axle carrier. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 134 ft. lbs. (184 Nm).
     
    Parking brake cable and slide the backing plate to the inside. Install the hex bolt and tighten it to 132 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
     
    Shoe guide plate set bolt. Tighten the bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    4 hub bolts and tighten them to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
     
    Bolts at the speed sensor and tighten them to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Halfshafts. Apply the brakes and tighten the locknut to 213 ft. lbs. (289 Nm).
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper support to the rear axle carrier. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
     
    Rear tire and wheel assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and bounce it a few times to stabilize the suspension.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rear tire and wheel assembly
     
    Brake caliper support bracket
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Speed sensor
     
    Rear halfshaft
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    2 bolts at the parking brake cable. Remove the 2 hub bolts and the hex bolt. Slide the backing plate to the outside and disconnect the parking brake cable.
     
    Strut rod at the axle carrier
     
    Nut, then press out the No. 1 lower suspension arm
     
    Nut, then press out the No. 2 lower suspension arm
     
    Nut, then press out the upper suspension arm.
     
    Axle carrier
     
    Dust deflector and pull out the oil seal.
     
    Axle hub from the carrier
     
    Backing plate
     
    Inner race (outside) from the hub
     
    Oil seal
     
    Snapring
     
    Bearing and inner race (inside)
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    If the inner races come loose from the bearing outer race, be sure to install them on the same side as before.



    Bearing to the axle carrier
     



    Snapring, the inner race (outside) and a new oil seal
     
    Backing plate. Install the inner race (inside) and press in the axle hub with the proper tools.
     
    Inner oil seal. Align the holes for the speed sensor in the dust deflector and axle carrier. Install the dust deflector.
     
    Upper arm to the axle carrier. Tighten the nut and bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (109 Nm).
     
    No. 2 lower arm to the carrier and tighten a new nut to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
     
    No. 1 lower arm to the carrier and tighten a new nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
     
    Strut rod to the carrier. Do not tighten the bolt at this time.
     
    Parking brake cable and slide the backing plate to the inside. Install the hex bolt and tighten it to 132 ft. lbs. (180 Nm). Install the 2 hub bolts and tighten them to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
     
    2 bolts at the parking brake cable and tighten them to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm). Install the parking brake shoes and the ABS sensor.
     
    Halfshaft. Tighten the locknut to 213 ft. lbs. (289 Nm).
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper to the rear axle carrier by installing the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
     
    Rear tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle and bounce it a few times to stabilize the suspension. Raise the vehicle again, support the axle carrier and tighten the strut rod to 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm).
