Fig. Performing the starter pull-in test.

NOTE
These tests must be performed within 3 to 5 seconds to prevent burnout of the coil.

  1. Perform the pull-in test as follows:

    1. Remove the nut, then disconnect the lead wire from terminal C.
    2.
    3. Connect the battery to the starter magnetic switch as shown in the illustration. Check that the clutch pinion gear is extended. If the clutch pinion gear does not move, replace the starter magnetic switch.

    4.

  2.
  3. Perform the hold-in test by performing the following:

    1. While connected as above with the pinion gear out, disconnect the negative (-) lead from terminal C.
    2.
    3. Check that the clutch pinion gear remains extended.
    4.
    5. If the clutch pinion gear returns inward, replace the starter magnetic switch.

  5. Perform the clutch pinion gear return test by performing the following:

    1. Disconnect the negative (-) lead from the switch body.
    2.
    3. Check that the clutch pinion gear returns.

  6.
  7. Perform the no-load performance test by performing the following:

    1. Connect the lead wire to terminal C. Make sure that the lead is not grounded. Torque to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.
    3. Clamp the starter in a vise.
    4.
    5. Connect the battery and an ammeter to the starter as shown in the illustration.
    6.
    7. Check that the starter rotates smoothly and steadily with the clutch pinion gear extended. Check that the ammeter reads the specified current. Specified current should read 100 amps or less at 11.5V.
    8.
    9. If the current is not as specified, replace the starter.
    10.

  8.

NOTE
These tests must be done within 3 to 5 seconds to avoid burning out the coil.

  1. Perform the pull-in test as follows:

    1. Disconnect the field coil lead wire from terminal C.
    2.
    3. Connect the battery to the magnetic switch as shown. Check that the clutch pinion gear moves outward.
    4.
    5. Disconnect the battery negative (-) lead from terminal C. Then check that the pinion gear remains out.
    6.
    7. Disconnect the negative (-) lead from the switch body. Check that the clutch pinion gear returns inward.
    8.

  2.
  3. Perform the operation test without load as follows:

    1. Connect the battery and ammeter to the starter as shown.
    2.
    3. Check that the starter rotates smoothly and steadily with the pinion gear moving out. Check that the ammeter shows the specified current. Specified current should read 100 amps or less at 11.5V.
    4.
    5. If the result is not as specified, replace the starter assembly.
    6.
