1MZ-FE Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery terminal
     
    Engine coolant
     
    Timing belt
     
    Right and left camshaft pulleys
     
    No. 2 idler pulley by removing the bolt
     
    3 clamps and engine wire from the rear timing belt cover
     
    6 bolts holding the rear timing belt cover to the engine block
     
    4 bolts and 2 nuts to the water pump
     
    Water pump
     
    All the old packing (sealant) and gasket material from the water pump and clean the mounting surfaces.
     
    All gasket material from the upper inner timing belt cover

To install:

  1. Check that the water pump turns smoothly. Also, check the air hole for coolant leakage.
  2.  
  3. Using a new gasket, apply liquid sealer to the gasket, water pump and engine block.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Gasket and pump to the engine and install the 4 bolts and 2 nuts. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
     
    Rear timing belt cover and tighten the 6 bolts to 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Engine wire with the 3 clamps to the rear timing belt cover
     
    No. 2 idler pulley with the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). After tightening the bolt, be sure the idler pulley moves smoothly.
     
    Right-hand camshaft pulley, with the flange sideoutward
     
    Left-hand camshaft pulley with the flange sideinward
     
    Timing belt
     
    Engine coolant
     
    Negative battery cable to the battery and start the engine.
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery terminal
     
    Engine coolant
     
    Timing belt
     
    Right and left camshaft pulleys
     
    No. 2 idler pulley by removing the bolt
     
    3 clamps and engine wire from the rear timing belt cover
     
    6 bolts holding the rear timing belt cover to the engine block
     
    4 bolts and 2 nuts to the water pump
     
    Water pump
     
    All the old packing (sealant) and gasket material from the water pump and clean the mounting surfaces.
     
    All gasket material from the upper inner timing belt cover

To install:

  1. Check that the water pump turns smoothly. Also, check the air hole for coolant leakage.

  3. Using a new gasket, apply liquid sealer to the gasket, water pump and engine block.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Gasket and pump to the engine and install the 4 bolts and 2 nuts. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
     
    Rear timing belt cover and tighten the 6 bolts to 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Engine wire with the 3 clamps to the rear timing belt cover
     
    No. 2 idler pulley with the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). After tightening the bolt, be sure the idler pulley moves smoothly.
     
    Right-hand camshaft pulley, with the flange side outward . Be sure to align the knock pinhole on the camshaft pulley with the knock pin on the camshaft. Camshaft bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
     
    Left-hand camshaft pulley with the flange side inward . Be sure to align the knock pin hole on the camshaft pulley with the knock pin on the camshaft. Camshaft bolt to 94 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
     
    Timing belt
     
    Engine coolant
     
    Negative battery cable to the battery and start the engine.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt
     
    No. 2 idler pulley
     
    Throttle body
     
    Bypass hose(s) from the water inlet housing
     
    2 bolts holding the water inlet housing to water pump
     
    Water inlet housing and discard the gasket
     
    Mounting bolts, studs and the nut to the water pump
     
    Water pump by carefully prying between the pump and the cylinder block
     
    The old gasket and clean all mounting surfaces
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install new seal packing to the water pump groove and a new O-ring to the water bypass pipe end.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump to the water bypass pipe end
     
    Water pump and tighten the mounting bolts and nut to13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Sealant to the groove of the water inlet housing

    Throttle body. Tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    No. 2 idler pulley
     
    Timing belt
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.

    Water pump and tighten the mounting bolts and nut to13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    Sealant to the groove of the water inlet housing

  4.  
  5. Fill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Radiator assembly
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter
     
    Intake air connector pipe assembly
     
    Serpentine drive belt
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Timing belt
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Water bypass outlet and the No. 1 water bypass pipe
     
    Water inlet and the thermostat
     
    Alternator (position aside)
     
    Bolt and engine wire bracket
     
    Bolt and clamp bracket for the Crankshaft Sensor (CKP) connector
     
    Nuts and the No. 2 water bypass pipe from the water pump
     
    6 bolts and the water pump and gasket
     
    Drain hose and the O-ring from the cylinder block

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring to the cylinder block
     
    Drain hose
     
    New gasket to the water pump
     
    Water pump to the water bypass pipe. Do NOT install the nut yet.
     
    Water pump with the 2 bolts (A) and the 4 bolts (B)
     

  2.  


NOTE
Hand-tighten the bolts (A) first. Tighten all 6 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).



2 nuts holding the No. 2 water bypass pipe to the water pump. Tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

    Bolt and clamp bracket for the Crankshaft Sensor (CKP) connector
     
    Nuts and the No. 2 water bypass pipe from the water pump
     
    6 bolts and the water pump and gasket
     
    Drain hose and the O-ring from the cylinder block

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE

    Water pump to the water bypass pipe. Do not install the nut yet.

    2 nuts holding the No. 2 water bypass pipe to the water pump. Tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

    New O-ring and the water bypass outlet with the 2 bolts and tighten them to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Loosen, but do not remove water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Do not turn the bolt "L" counterclockwise.



    Engine under cover
     
    Cool air intake duct seal
     
    No. 1 inlet air cleaner
     
    V-bank engine cover
     
    Serpentine drive belt
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    No. 2 engine cover
     
    No. 1 engine cover
     
    Mounting fasteners and injector driver unit
     
    Radiator inlet and outlet hoses
     
    5 hoses from the water inlet housing
     
    Water inlet housing, gasket and O-ring
     
    Bolt, cover plate and No. 2 idler pulley

To install:

  1. Install a new water pump gasket and water pump assembly with the 16 mounting bolts and tighten as follows:
    NOTE
    Be sure to replace 2 bolts C with new ones or reuse them after applying adhesive 1344. Make sure that there is no oil on the threads of the A bolts.



    Bolt A: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Bolt B: 81 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Bolt C: 81 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    Be careful when tightening the bolt because it is left-hand threaded.


    NOTE
    Be careful not to allow the O-ring to get caught between parts.



    Belt tensioner pulley and cover plate with bolt. Torque the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     



    No. 2 idler pulley, cover plate and bolt. Torque the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    Water inlet housing, new gasket and O-ring. Torque the 4 mounting bolts and nut to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
     



    5 hoses to the water inlet housing
     
    Inlet and outlet radiator hoses and new clamps
     
    Water pump pulley with 4 bolts finger tight only
     
    Injector driver unit
     
    No. 1 engine cover
     
    No. 2 engine cover
     
    Serpentine drive belt
     
    V-bank engine cover
     
    No. 1 inlet air cleaner
     
    Cool air intake duct seal
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Torque the 4 water pump pulley bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
  6.  
  7. Add engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine, check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Recheck all fluid levels and add if necessary.
  12.  
  13. Perform system initialization (which includes power window control system, sliding roof system, clearance sonar system and variable gear ratio steering system) procedure as follows:

    Power window control system
     

    1. Turn the ignition switch on.
    2.  
    3. Open power window halfway by pressing power window switch.
    4.  
    5. Fully pull up the switch until the power window is fully closed and continue to hold the switch for at least 1 second.
    6.  
    7. Check that the AUTO UP / DOWN function operates normally.
      NOTE
      If the remote UP / DOWN function does not operate after the conditions 1), 2), or 3) is satisfied, the power window regulator master switch may have a malfunction.



      Sliding roof system
       

    8.  
    9. Turn the ignition switch on.
    10.  
    11. If the sliding roof is opened, close it fully.
    12.  
    13. Push the open switch of the slide switch, or the up switch of the tilt switch on the personal light, making the sliding roof tilt up approximately 1 second, tilt down, slide open, slide close.
    14.  
    15. Sliding roof stops at the fully closed position.
    16.  
    17. Finish the initialization.
    18.  
    19. Check that the operation works normally with AUTO operation.

      Clearance sonar system
       

    20.  
    21. Turn the ignition switch on.
    22.  
    23. Turn the clearance sonar main switch ON.
    24.  
    25. Turn the steering wheel to the full left and right lock position.
      NOTE
      Make sure to completely turn the steering wheel to the left and right full lock position.

    26.  
    27. Confirm that the learning operation has been completed by checking the multi-information display.
    28.  
    29. At an area with few turns and curves, and minimal traffic, drive at 20 km/h or more for 5 minutes or more.

      Variable gear ratio steering system
       

    30.  
    31. Turn the ignition switch on, and check that the master warning light and VSC/ABS warning lights illuminate for a few seconds.
      NOTE
      If the warning lights remain on or blink, repair the applicable system.

    32.  
    33. Drive the vehicle on a straight road at 35 km/h (22 mph) or more for 5 seconds or longer.
    34.  
    35. Confirm that steering angle sensor initialization is completed by doing the following:

      Drive the vehicle on a straight road at 60 km/h (37 mph) or more for 30 seconds or longer.
       
      Stop the vehicle (engine running).
       
      Slowly turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.
       
      If it turns approximately 2.7 turns, steering angle sensor initialization is completed. If it turns approximately 3.2 turns, steering angle sensor initialization is not completed.

  15. Road test the vehicle.

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump assembly with new gasket. Torque to 71 inch lbs. (8.0 Nm)
     
    Timing belt idler #1. Torque to 25 ft. lbs (24 Nm)
     
    Timing belt cover #3
     
    Camshaft timing pulleys
     
    Timing belt idler sub-assembly
     
    Timing belt, tensioner assembly and guide
     
    Engine mounting bracket
     
    Upper and lower timing belts covers
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Alternator bracket
     
    Engine mounting stay
     
    Engine stabilizing control rod
     
    PS pump
     
    A/C drive belt

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New gasket, water pump with 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts and nuts. Tighten bolt to 15 ft lbs (21 Nm) and stud nuts to 13 ft. lbs (18 Nm)
     
    Water inlet housing with new O-ring and seal packing

NOTE
If O-ring contacts engine oil it must be replaced

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    If O-ring contacts engine oil it must be replaced



    New gasket, water pump with 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts and nuts. Tighten bolt to 15 ft lbs (21 Nm) and stud nuts to 13 ft. lbs (18 Nm)
     
    Water inlet housing with new O-ring and seal packing
     



    Timing belt idler sub assembly
     
    Timing belt assembly
     
    Radiator assembly
     
    Engine coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check for coolant leaks
  4.  
  5. Initialize the power windows and seat control systems

    Engine under cover
