Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shift knob.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper trim panels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the console.
  8.  
  9. Remove the snapring and remove the transfer case lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine under-covers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front suspension member brackets.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the oxygen sensor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  18.  
  19. Remove the driveshafts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the drain plug.
  22.  
  23. Remove the transmission control cable.
  24.  
  25. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  26.  
  27. Remove the crossmember.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect all wires and lines as necessary.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the breather hose.
  32.  
  33. Remove the bellhousing cover.
  34.  
  35. Turn the crankshaft as needed to access the torque converter bolts and remove them.
  36.  
  37. Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.
  38.  
  39. Remove the transmission/transfer case assembly.
  40.  
  41. Separate the transfer case from the transmission.
  42.  
  43. Remove the rear mount from the transmission.
  44.  
  45. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Rear mount: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Control cable bracket: 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Transfer case-to-transmission: 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
     
    Transmission-to-engine: 17mm bolts, 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm); 14mm bolts, 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    Torque converter bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
     
    Bellhousing cover: 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    Crossmember-to-frame: 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     
    Transmission-to-crossmember: 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    Front and rear driveshaft flanges: 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     
    Suspension member brackets: 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm)
