  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  


NOTE
Wait at least 90 seconds before working on the vehicle to allow the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) system to disarm.



Right and left side fender apron seals
 
Right and left tie rod ends
 

  1. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Pinch bolt and the intermediate shaft out from under the vehicle
     
    Power steering line clamp
     
    Pressure and feed lines
     
    Stabilizer bar, unbolt it but do not remove it
     
    Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor
     
    Both gear assembly set bolts and nuts, by lifting the stabilizer bar
     
    Gear assembly from the left side of the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Gear assembly to the left side of the vehicle
     

  2.  


WARNING
Be careful not to damage the power steering lines.



Tighten the gear assembly set bolts and nuts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm), by lifting the stabilizer bar
 
HO2 sensor
 
Stabilizer bar. Tighten the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) and the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
 
Pressure and feed return lines. Tighten them to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
 
Line clamps. Tighten the nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
 
Intermediate shaft, by aligning the joint and main shaft matchmarks. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
 
Tie rod ends
 
Fender apron seals. Securely tighten the bolts.
 

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steering wheel pad
     
    Steering wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Position the front wheels facing straight-ahead. Do this with the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Center the spiral cable.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel at the straight-ahead position. Temporarily tighten the wheel set nut. Attach the wiring.
  8.  
  9. Bleed the power steering system.
  10.  
  11. Check the steering wheel center point. Tighten the steering nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  14.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Right and left tie rod ends
     

  4.  
  5. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Pinch bolt and the intermediate shaft out from under the vehicle
     
    Power steering line clamp
     
    Pressure and feed lines
     
    Stabilizer bar, unbolt it but do not remove it
     
    Heated Oxygen (HO 2 ) sensor
     
    Both gear assembly set bolts and nuts, by lifting the stabilizer bar
     
    Gear assembly from the left side of the vehicle
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the power steering lines.



    Gear assembly to the left side of the vehicle
     



    Tighten the gear assembly set bolts and nuts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm), by lifting the stabilizer bar
     
    HO 2 sensor
     
    Stabilizer bar. Tighten the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) and the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Pressure and feed return lines. Tighten them to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Line clamps. Tighten the nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Intermediate shaft, by aligning the joint and main shaft matchmarks. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Fender apron seals. Securely tighten the bolts.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steering wheel pad
     
    Steering wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Position the front wheels facing straight-ahead. Do this with the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Center the spiral cable.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel at the straight-ahead position. Temporarily tighten the wheel set nut. Attach the wiring.
  10.  
  11. Bleed the power steering system.
  12.  
  13. Check the steering wheel center point. Tighten the steering nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Center the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark and disconnect the intermediate shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheels.
  8.  
  9. Separate the tie rods.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the stabilizer bar end links.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stabilizer bar brackets.
  16.  
  17. Remove the height control sensor.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the pressure and return lines.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts and nuts and remove the steering rack assembly.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Position the assembly and install the bolts and nuts. Torque the nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the pressure and lines. Torque to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Torque the clamp bolt to 87 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Tie rod end nuts: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar end links: 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar bracket bolts: 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     
    Intermediate shaft bolt: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
