REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     

  4.  


NOTE
If equipped, be careful not to damage the oil seal, driveshaft boot and/or speed sensor rotor when removing the steering knuckle.



Shock absorber (strut assembly)
 

  1. Install a nut/bolt to the bracket at the lower portion of the strut assembly and secure it in a vise.
  2.  
  3. Compress the coil spring with a spring compressor.
  4.  


CAUTION
The proper tools must be used for this procedure. The spring on the strut is under high pressure and can cause serious injury if not properly removed and installed.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center retaining nut, by holding the spring seat
     
    Support, dust seal, spring seat, insulator and spring from the strut assembly
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install the spring bumper and lower insulator to the strut assembly.
  2.  
  3. Compress the coil spring and fit the lower end of the spring into the spring seat gap.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Upper insulator, spring seat, dust seal, support and spring seat. Tighten the new retaining nut to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) for RX300; 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) for RX330.
     
    Strut
     
    Wheel
     

  6.  
  7. If required, bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE

  4.  
  5. Install a nut/bolt to the bracket at the lower portion of the strut assembly and secure it in a vise.

To install:

  1. Install the spring bumper and lower insulator to the strut assembly.
  2.  
  3. Compress the coil spring and fit the lower end of the spring into the spring seat gap.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Upper insulator, spring seat, dust seal, support and spring seat. Tighten the new retaining nut to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) for RX300; 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) for RX330.

    Wheel
     

  6.  
  7. If required, bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Deck side cover
     
    Rear wheels
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensor from the strut bracket
     
    Flexible brake hose from the strut
     
    Sway bar link from the strut
     
    Loosen the 2 lower strut mounting bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    3 upper strut mounting nuts
     
    Strut, by lower the rear axle
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut
     
    Both lower strut mounting bolts, but do not tighten
     
    Axle carrier by aligning the 3 upper mounting studs. Tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the axle carrier.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Tighten both lower mounting bolts to 188 ft. lbs. (255 Nm).
     
    Sway bar link. Tighten the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Flexible brake hose and the ABS sensor to the strut
     
    Rear wheels and the deck side cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Deck side cover
     
    Rear wheels
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensor from the strut bracket
     
    Flexible brake hose from the strut
     
    Sway bar link from the strut
     
    Loosen the 2 lower strut mounting bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    3 upper strut mounting nuts
     
    Strut, by lower the rear axle
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut
     
    Both lower strut mounting bolts, but do not tighten
     
    Axle carrier by aligning the 3 upper mounting studs. Tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).

  3. Lower the axle carrier.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Tighten both lower mounting bolts to 188 ft. lbs. (255 Nm).
     
    Sway bar link. Tighten the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Flexible brake hose and the ABS sensor to the strut
     
    Rear wheels and the deck side cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tonneau cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left side deck trim cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer link from the strut.
  10.  
  11. On 2-wheel drive models, disconnect the skid control sensor wire and brake hose from the strut and carrier.
  12.  
  13. On 4-wheel drive models, disconnect the brake hose and speed sensor from the strut and carrier.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the 2 nuts at the lower end of the strut, but don-t remove them.
  16.  
  17. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 3 upper strut nuts and lower the axle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower strut bolts and nuts. Lift out the strut.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Position the strut and install the 3 upper nuts. Torque to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lift the axle and install the 2 lower bolts and nuts. Torque to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  4.  
  5. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Brake hose clamp: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Wire-to-strut clamp: 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Sensor clamp: 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
