Adjustment

Check the bearing play in the axial direction and also check the axle hub deviation. The maximum play for both checks should be 0.0020 in. (0.05mm). If greater than the specified maximum, replace the bearing. The wheel bearing is not adjustable.

Removal & Installation

The 4wd rear wheel bearings are serviced as a unit with the hub and are not replaceable. See the Halfshaft Removal and Installation procedure.

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.
  3. Remove the speed sensor from the axle carrier.
  4.
  5. Remove the axle shaft nut.
  6.
  7. Remove the caliper and support assembly and suspend it out of the way.
  8.
  9. Check the bearing backlash. It should not exceed 0.0020 in. (0.05mm). If it does, it must be replaced.
  10.
  11. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the hub/bearing assembly.
  12.
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

Hub/bearing assembly bolts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)

Caliper support: 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm)

Brake hose clamp: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)

Hub nut: 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm)
