Wheel Speed Sensors

Removal & Installation



Front
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 3 screws, bolt and front fender mudguard sub-assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts, screws, clips and front fender splash shield sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front speed sensor, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the front speed sensor connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 bolts from the body and the shock absorber assembly.
    4.  
    5. Remove the clamp from the steering knuckle.

    7. Remove the bolt and the front speed sensor.
      NOTE
      Prevent foreign matter from attaching to the sensor tip. Clean the installation hole and the surface for the speed sensor every time the speed sensor is removed.

  11. Inspect the front speed sensor. If any of the following occurs, replace the front speed sensor with a new one:
    1. The surface of the front speed sensor is cracked, dented, or chipped off.
    2.  
    3. The connector is scratched, cracked, or damaged.
    4.  
    5. The front speed sensor has been dropped.
    6.

To install:

  1. Install the front speed sensor, as follows:
    1. Install the front speed sensor with the bolt and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8.0 Nm).
      NOTE
      Prevent foreign matter from attaching to the sensor tip.

    2.  
    3. Install the front speed sensor with the 2 bolts and the clamp. Tighten bolt A to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm) and bolt B to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
      WARNING
      Do not twist the wire harness for the front speed sensor when installing the front speed sensor.

      Fig. Install the front speed sensor with the 2 bolts and the clamp. Tighten bolt A to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm) and bolt B to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)

    5. Connect the front speed sensor connector.

  3. Install the front fender splash shield sub-assembly with the bolts, screws, and clips.
  4.  
  5. Install front fender mudguard subassembly with the 3 screws and bolt.
  6.  
  7. Install the front wheel and tire assembly, then carefully lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check the speed sensor signal.
  10.  
  11. If necessary, perform the initialization procedure, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical System.

Rear
4wd Vehicles
  1. Remove deck board sub-assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove no. 2 deck board sub-assembly
    1. Remove no. 3 deck board sub-assembly
    2.  
    3. Remove the rear deck floor box.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. For models without the no. 2 rear seat, remove the front deck floor box front.
  6.  
  7. Remove rear floor finish plate
  8.  
  9. Remove the right and left side deck side trim boxes.
  10.  
  11. For models with the no. 2 rear seat, remove the rear seat track covers:
    1. Using a molding remover, disengage the 4 claws and remove the rear seat track cover. side.
    2.

  13. Remove rear seat track bracket cover outer (w/ rear no. 2 seat):
    1. Disengage the 2 claws and clip and remove the rear seat track bracket cover outer.
    2.

  15. Remove the rear door scuff plate.
  16.  
  17. For models with the no. 2 rear seat, remove the deck board no.1 check:
    1. Remove the 4 nuts and deck board no.1 check.
    2.

  19. If equipped, remove rear no.2 seat assembly.
  20.  
  21. For models without the no. 2 rear seat, remove the deck side trim cover.
  22.  
  23. For models with the no. 2 rear seat, remove the left side deck side trim cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the deck trim side panel assembly.
  26.  
  27. Raise and safely support the vehicle, then remove rear wheel and tire assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove rear speed sensor, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the rear speed sensor connector.
      WARNING
      Be careful not to damage the wire harness when pulling out the harness.

    2.  
    3. Pull out the sensor wire harness with the grommet.
      NOTE
      Do not pull the sensor wire.

    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 bolts that hold the sensor harness from the body and the shock absorber bracket.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolt and the rear speed sensor.
      NOTE
      Prevent foreign matter from attaching to the sensor tip. Clean the installation hole and surface for the speed sensor every time the speed sensor is removed.

  31. Inspect the rear speed sensor. If any of the following occurs, replace the rear speed sensor with a new one:
    1. The surface of the rear speed sensor is cracked, dented, or chipped off.
    2.  
    3. The connector is scratched, cracked, or damaged.
    4.  
    5. The rear speed sensor has been dropped.

To install:

  1. Install rear speed sensor, as follows:
    1. Install the rear speed sensor with the bolt and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
      NOTE
      Prevent foreign matter from attaching to the sensor tip.

    2.  
    3. Install the sensor harness clamps with the 2 bolts to the body and the shock absorber bracket. Tighten to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
      WARNING
      Do not twist the sensor wire when installing the sensor.

    4.  
    5. Push in the sensor wire harness with the grommet.
      WARNING
      When installing the grommet, do not pull the sensor wire. only pull the grommet.

    6.  
    7. Connect the speed sensor rear connector.
    8.  

  2.  
  3. Install rear wheel, then lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, perform the initialization procedure, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical System.
