Installation



2.5L And 4.0L Engines
Timing Disturbed
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Set the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the No. 1 cylinder compression stroke.
  4.  
  5. Position the slot in the oil pump drive gear as shown.

  7. Locate the alignment holes in the plastic ring and align the correct hole with the mating hole in the distributor housing as shown. Install a locking pin.
    NOTE
    The distributor will rotate clockwise as the gears engage.

  9. Position the base mounting slot at the 1 o-clock position and install the distributor.
  10.  
  11. Check that the centerline of the mounting slot aligns with the centerline of the clamp bolt hole.
  12.  
  13. Install the clamp and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove the locking pin.
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    CMP sensor connector
     
    Distributor cap
     
    Air cleaner tube
     
    Negative battery cable

Timing Not Disturbed
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    NOTE
    The rotor will rotate clockwise as the gears engage.

  3. Position the rotor slightly counterclockwise of the matchmark made during removal.
  4.  
  5. Install the distributor. Ensure that the rotor moves into alignment with the matchmark.
  6.  
  7. Align the locating fork with the clamp bolt hole. Install the clamp and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder No. 1 spark plug
     
    Distributor wiring harness to the main engine harness
     
    CMP sensor connector
     
    Distributor cap
     
    Air cleaner tube
     
    Negative battery cable

Removal & Installation



2.5L And 4.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Distributor cap
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector
     
    Distributor wiring harness from the main engine harness
     
    Cylinder No. 1 spark plug
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the distributor housing and the rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the distributor.
  8.
