Removal & Installation



2.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove flexplate/flywheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Paint mark or scribe a witness mark on the engine block to be used for alignment purposes during assembly.
  6.  
  7. Pry out old crankshaft oil seal.
  8.

To install:

    To prevent potential oil leaks, DO NOT touch or separate the rear crankshaft inner seal from the seal cup. When replacing the rear crankshaft carrier, DO NOT touch or separate the seal cup from the rear oil seal. Always handle the components as an assembly and from their outer diameter.

  1. Using special tool VM.1050, install rear crankshaft oil seal in rear main bearing support.
  2.  
  3. Install engine or transmission in vehicle.
  4.  

3.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     

  4.  
  5. Thread Oil Seal Remover 8506 into the rear main seal as far as possible and remove the rear main seal.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Seal Guide 8349-2 onto the crankshaft
     
    Rear main seal on the seal guide
     
    Rear main seal, using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer 8349 and Driver Handle C-4171; tap it into place until the installer is flush with the cylinder block
     
    Flexplate. Torque the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    Transmission

  3. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
