Timing Belt Cover

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
Front Cover
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper.
  4.  
  5. Remove the generator drive belt tensioner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt front cover bolts, and remove the covers.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the timing belt front covers. Tighten the fasteners to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the generator drive belt tensioner.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft vibration damper.
  6.  

Inner Cover
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove accessory drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove cooling fan support.
  10.  
  11. Remove vibration damper.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the engine to 90 degrees ATDC.
  14.  
  15. Remove timing belt outer cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove timing belt.
  18.  
  19. Remove timing belt idler pulleys.
  20.  
  21. Using special tool VM.1085, remove camshaft sprockets .
  22.  
  23. Remove timing belt tensioner .
  24.  
  25. Remove timing belt inner cover retaining bolts and remove cover .
  26.  

To install:


NOTE
Rotate crankshaft hub to 90 degrees ATDC, or the three O-clock position.

  1. Install timing belt inner cover to engine front cover seal .
  2.  
  3. Install timing belt inner cover to cylinder head cover gaskets .
  4.  
  5. Install timing belt inner cover and retaining bolts. Torque 10mm bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47.1 Nm) and 8mm bolts to 96 inch lbs. (10.8 Nm.).
  6.  
  7. Install timing belt idler pulleys (.
  8.  
  9. Install camshaft sprockets. Hand tighten bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install timing belt and tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Install special tool VM.1085 between camshaft gears and tighten thumb screws to engage and retain the camshaft gears .
  14.  
  15. Tighten the camshaft gear bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) while holding the gears with special tool VM 1085 .
  16.  
  17. Install timing belt outer cover.
  18.  
  19. Install vibration damper.
  20.  
  21. Install cooling fan support.
  22.  
  23. Install accessory drive belt.
  24.  
  25. Install cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
  26.  
  27. Install engine cover.
  28.  
  29. Connect negative battery cable.
  30.  

Outer Cover
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove accessory drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove cooling fan support.
  10.  
  11. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
  12.  
  13. Remove vibration damper.
  14.  
  15. Remove timing belt outer cover retaining bolts and remove cover .
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install timing belt outer cover seal and cover. Torque 3mm bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install vibration damper.
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering pump pulley.
  6.  
  7. Install cooling fan support.
  8.  
  9. Install accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Install cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install engine cover.
  14.  
  15. Connect negative battery cable.
  16.  

Rear Cover
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front covers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Hold the camshaft sprocket with Special Tool 6847, or equivalent, while removing the center bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt idler pulley.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear cover fasteners and remove the cover from engine.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the timing belt rear cover and bolts.
    NOTE
    Do not use an impact wrench for tightening the camshaft sprocket bolt. Damage to the timing locating pin can occur. Hand tighten using a wrench ONLY.

  2.  
  3. Install the camshaft sprockets. Hold the sprockets with Special Tool 6848, or equivalent, and tighten the center bolt to 75 ft. lbs. (101 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the timing belt idler pulley and tighten the mounting bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Install the front covers.
  10.
