Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Disc brake caliper and rotor
     
    Wheel bearing
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Steering knuckle
     
    Lower ball joint

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower ball joint
     
    Steering knuckle. Torque the nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Wheel bearing
     
    Disc brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove hub/bearing and axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the tie-rod or drag link from the steering knuckle arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pins from the upper and lower ball studs.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper and lower ball stud nuts.
  10.  
  11. Using special tool C-4150A separate the ball joints from the steering knuckle. Remove knuckle from ball studs.

To install:

  1. Position the steering knuckle on the ball studs.
  2.  
  3. Install and tighten the bottom retaining nut to 80 ft. lbs. (109 Nm) torque. Install new cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten the top retaining nut to 75 ft. lbs. (101 Nm) torque. Install new cotter pin.
  6.  
  7. Install the hub bearing and axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Connect the tie-rod or drag link end to the steering knuckle arm. Torque to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Lower clevis bracket bolt from the control arm
     
    Stabilizer link at the control arm
     
    Lower ball joint nut
     
    Control arm from lower ball joint with tool C4150A, or equivalent
     

  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the ball joint nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm); the stabilizer link bolt to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm); the lower clevis bracket bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
