Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



The front wheel bearings are not adjustable.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper adapter.
    WARNING
    Never allow the disc brake caliper to hang from the brake hose. Damage to the brake hose will result. Provide a suitable support to hang the caliper securely.

  8.  
  9. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel speed sensor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bracket securing the wheel speed sensor wire.
  14.  
  15. Remove the axle shaft nut, if equipped with four wheel drive.
  16.  
  17. Remove the three mounting bolts for the hub/bearing assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the hub/bearing.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the hub/bearing assembly to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the three mounting bolts for the hub/bearing. Tighten the bolt to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the axle shaft nut. Tighten the nut to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm), if equipped with four wheel drive.
  6.  
  7. Install the bracket to the wheel speed sensor wire.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel speed sensor to the hub. Tighten the bolt to10 ft. lbs. (13.5 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the disc brake rotor.
  12.  
  13. Install the disc brake caliper adapter. Tighten the nut to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper, rotor and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin, nut retainer and axle hub nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hub bearing mounting bolts from the back of the steering knuckle. Remove hub bearing from the steering knuckle and off the axle shaft.

To install:

  1. Install the hub bearing and brake dust shield to the knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub bearing to knuckle bolts and tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the hub washer and nut. Tighten the hub nut to 175 ft. lbs. (237 Nm). Install the nut retainer and a new cotter pin.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake rotor, caliper and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove support and lower the vehicle.
  12.  

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Grease cap
     
    Split pin
     
    Nut retainer
     
    Nut and washer
     
    Outer bearing
     
    Brake rotor and hub assembly
     
    Grease seal
     
    Inner bearing

To install:


NOTE
Use new grease seals and split pins.

  1. Pack the wheel bearings and the inside of the hub with high temperature wheel bearing grease. Add grease to the hub until it is flush with the inside diameter of the bearing cup.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Inner bearing
     
    Grease seal
     
    Brake rotor and hub assembly
     
    Outer bearing
     
    Nut and washer
     
    Nut retainer
     
    Split pin
     
    Grease cap
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Front wheel

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Wheel speed sensor and bracket
     
    Axle stub shaft nut (except 2-WD Liberty)
     
    Hub and wheel bearing assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub assembly over the axle stub shaft. Tighten the hub bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm) except Liberty; 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm) for Liberty models
     
    Axle stub shaft nut. Torque the nut to 175 ft. lbs. (237 Nm) except Liberty; 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm) for 4-WD Liberty models
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
