Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Place the transmission in first or third gear.
  4.  
  5. Drain the fluid from the transmission.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Skid plate
     
    Clutch slave cylinder
     
    Rear propeller shaft
     
    Front propeller shaft, if equipped
     
    Wire harness from the transmission and transfer case, if equipped
     
    Transfer case shift linkage, if equipped
     
    Transfer case, if equipped
     
    Crankcase Position (CKP) sensor
     
    Rear cushion and transmission bracket after supporting the engine and transmission
     
    Rear crossmember
     
    Transmission shift lever
     
    Clutch housing brace rod
     
    Transmission
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Tighten the 3 / 8 inch bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm), the 7 / 16 inch bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm), and the 12mm bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Shift lever
     
    Rear crossmember. Torque the bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Rear cushion and bracket. Torque the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Transfer case, if equipped. Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Transfer case shift linkage, if equipped.
     
    Wire harness to the transmission.
     
    Front driveshaft and transfer case, if equipped. Torque the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Rear driveshaft. Torque the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Clutch slave cylinder.
     
    Skid plate. Torque the bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
     
    Exhaust front pipe.
     
    Negative battery cable.
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission with the proper fluid.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.

  1. Shift transmission into first or third gear.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support vehicle on suitable safety stands.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect necessary exhaust system components.
  6.  
  7. Remove skid plate, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove slave cylinder from clutch housing.
  10.  
  11. Mark rear propeller shaft and rear axle yokes for installation alignment.
  12.  
  13. Mark front propeller shaft, axle, and transfer case yokes for installation alignment, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove propeller shaft(s)
  16.  
  17. Unclip wire harnesses from transmission and transfer case, if equipped.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect transfer case vent hose, if equipped.
  20.  
  21. Disengage any wire connectors attached to transmission or transfer case, if equipped, components.
  22.  
  23. Support transfer case, if equipped, with transmission jack.
  24.  
  25. Secure transfer case, if equipped, to jack with safety chains.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect transfer case shift linkage at transfer case, if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Remove nuts attaching transfer case to transmission, if equipped.
  30.  
  31. Remove transfer case, if equipped.
  32.  
  33. Remove crankshaft position sensor.
    CAUTION
    It is important that the crankshaft position sensor be removed prior to transmission removal. The sensor can easily be damaged if left in place during removal operations.

  35. Support engine with adjustable jack stand. Position wood block between jack and oil pan to avoid damaging pan.
  36.  
  37. Support transmission with transmission jack.
  38.  
  39. Secure transmission to jack with safety chains.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect rear cushion and bracket from transmission.
  42.  
  43. Remove rear crossmember.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect transmission shift lever as follows:
  46.  
  47. Lower transmission - transfer case assembly approximately 3 inches (7-8 cm) for access to shift lever.
  48.  
  49. Reach up and around transmission case and unseat shift lever dust boot from transmission shift tower Move boot upward on shift lever for access to retainer that secures lever in shift tower.
  50.  
  51. Reach up and around transmission case and press shift lever retainer downward with finger pressure. Turn retainer counterclockwise to release it.
  52.  
  53. Lift lever and retainer out of shift tower Do not remove the shift lever from the floor console shifter boots. Leave the lever in place for transmission installation.
  54.  
  55. Remove clutch housing brace rod.
  56.  
  57. Remove clutch housing-to-engine bolts.
  58.  
  59. Pull transmission jack rearward until input shaft clears clutch. Then slide transmission out from under vehicle.
  60.  
  61. Remove clutch release bearing, release fork, and retainer clip.
  62.  
  63. Remove clutch housing from transmission.
  64.  

To install:

  1. Install clutch housing on transmission. Tighten housing bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm) torque.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate contact surfaces of release fork pivot ball stud and release fork with high temp grease.
  4.  
  5. Install release bearing, fork, and retainer clip.
  6.  
  7. Position and secure transmission on transmission jack.
  8.  
  9. Lightly lubricate pilot bearing and transmission input shaft splines with Mopar® high temp grease.
  10.  
  11. Raise transmission and align transmission input shaft and clutch disc splines. Then slide transmission into place.
  12.  
  13. Install and tighten clutch housing-to-engine bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm) torque Be sure the housing is properly seated on engine block before tightening bolts. Install clutch housing brace rod.
  14.  
  15. Lower transmission approximately 3 inches (7-8 cm) for access to shift tower. Be sure transmission is in first or third gear.
  16.  
  17. Reach up and around transmission and insert shift lever in shift tower. Press lever retainer downward and turn it clockwise to lock it in place. Then install lever dust boot on shift tower.
  18.  
  19. Install rear crossmember. Tighten crossmember-to-frame bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) torque.
  20.  
  21. Install fasteners to hold rear cushion and bracket to transmission. Then tighten transmission-to-rear support bolts/nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) torque.
  22.  
  23. Remove support stands from engine and transmission.
  24.  
  25. Install and connect crankshaft position sensor.
  26.  
  27. Position transfer case on transmission jack, if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Secure transfer case to jack with safety chains, if equipped.
  30.  
  31. Raise transfer case, if equipped, and align transfer case input shaft to the transmission output shaft.
  32.  
  33. Slide transfer case forward until case is seated on transmission, if necessary.
  34.  
  35. Install nuts to attach transfer case to transmission, if equipped. Tighten transfer case-to-transmission nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) torque.
  36.  
  37. Connect transfer case shift linkage at transfer case, if equipped.
  38.  
  39. Connect transfer case vent hose, if equipped.
  40.  
  41. Secure wire harnesses in clips/tie straps on transmission and transfer case, if equipped.
  42.  
  43. Engage wire connectors attached to all necessary transmission or transfer case, if equipped, components.
  44.  
  45. Install rear propeller shaft slip yoke to transmission or transfer case, if equipped, output shaft.
  46.  
  47. Align marks on rear propeller shaft and rear axle yokes.
  48.  
  49. Install and tighten propeller shaft U-joint clamp bolts to 170 inch lbs. (19 Nm) torque.
  50.  
  51. Align marks on front propeller shaft, axle, and transfer case yokes, if equipped.
  52.  
  53. Install and tighten propeller shaft U-joint clamp bolts to 170 inch lbs. (19 Nm) torque.
  54.  
  55. Install slave cylinder in clutch housing.
  56.  
  57. Install skid plate, if equipped. Tighten bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm) torque. Tighten stud nuts to 150 inch lbs. (17 Nm) torque.
  58.  
  59. Fill transmission and transfer case, if equipped, with recommended lubricants.
  60.  
  61. Lower vehicle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  6.  
  7. Remove drain plug and drain fluid.
  8.  
  9. Mark installation reference marks on propeller shaft/shafts and remove shafts.
  10.  
  11. Remove transfer case shift cable bracket nuts, cable, wiring connector, and vent hose, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove transfer case, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Support transmission with jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove transmission mount and crossmember.
  18.  
  19. On 2.4L engine remove catalyst assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove clutch slave cylinder nuts and remove cylinder.
  22.  
  23. Remove backup lamp switch wiring connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove shift lever tower bolts and remove shift lever housing.
  26.  
  27. Remove starter bolts and remove starter.
  28.  
  29. Remove transmission bolt and remove transmission.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install transmission on engine.
  2.  
  3. On 3.7L engine tighten bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). Tighten bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (67 Nm). Tighten bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. On 2.4L engine tighten bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm). Install lower dust shield and tighten bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
  6.  
  7. On 2.8L diesel engine tighten bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). Tighten bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (67 Nm). Tighten bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Clean shift tower and mating surface then apply Mopar® Gasket Maker to shift tower.
  10.  
  11. Install shift tower and tighten bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install back-up lamp wiring connector.
  14.  
  15. Install clutch slave cylinder and mounting nuts.
  16.  
  17. Install catalyst assembly on 2.4L engine.
  18.  
  19. Install transmission crossmember and tighten bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Install transmission mount bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install transfer case, if equipped.
  22.  
  23. Install transfer case shift cable on 2.4L. Install transfer case shift linkage on 3.7L.
  24.  
  25. Install transfer case wiring connector and vent hose.
  26.  
  27. Install propeller shaft/shafts with reference marks aligned.
  28.  
  29. Remove fill plug and fill transmission with lubricant.
  30.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  6.  
  7. Remove drain plug and drain fluid.
  8.  
  9. Mark installation reference marks on driveshafts and remove shafts.
  10.  
  11. Remove transfer case shift linkage, wiring connector, and vent hose, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove transfer case, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Support transmission with jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove transmission mount and crossmember.
  18.  
  19. Remove catalyst assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove clutch slave cylinder nuts and remove cylinder.
  22.  
  23. Remove backup lamp switch wiring connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove shift lever tower bolts and remove shift lever tower.
  26.  
  27. Remove starter bolts and remove starter.
  28.  
  29. Remove transmission bolt and remove transmission.
  30.

  1. Install transmission on engine.
  2.  
  3. On 2.4L engine tighten bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm). Install lower dust shield and tighten bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  4.  
  5. On 4.0L engine tighten bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm). Install side and lower dust shield and tighten bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Clean shift tower and mating surface then apply Mopar® Gasket Maker, or equivalent, to shift tower.
  8.  
  9. Install shift tower and tighten bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install backup lamp wiring connector.
  12.  
  13. Install clutch slave cylinder and mounting nuts.
  14.  
  15. Install catalyst assembly on 2.4L engine.
  16.  
  17. Install transmission cross member and tighten bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Install transmission mount bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install transfer case, if equipped.
  20.  
  21. Install transfer case shift linkage.
  22.  
  23. Install transfer case wiring connector and vent hose.
  24.  
  25. Install driveshafts with reference marks aligned. Torque as follows:

    Front driveshaft to axle: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Front driveshaft to transfer case: 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
     
    Rear driveshaft to axle: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Rear driveshaft to transfer case (Rubicon): 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)

  27. Remove fill plug and fill transmission with lubricant.

  29. Locate narrow adapter plate opening towards the rear of the engine and top of the transmission bell housing from the driver-s side of the engine compartment.
  30.  
  31. Thoroughly clean around the adapter opening with throttle body cleaner and allow cleaner to dry.
  32.  
  33. With your finger, apply a sufficient amount of RTV over the spacer opening. Verify that the adapter opening is completely sealed off by the RTV.

  3. Shift transmission into neutral.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove skid plate if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove wiring connectors from the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Remove propeller shaft/shafts.
  12.  
  13. Remove transfer case shift cable, vent hose and transfer case, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove slave cylinder from clutch housing.
  16.  
  17. Remove starter.
  18.  
  19. Support engine with jack stand. Position wood block between jack and oil pan to avoid damaging pan.
  20.  
  21. Support transmission with a transmission jack.
  22.  
  23. Remove crossover pipe from manifold extensions.
  24.  
  25. Remove exhaust hanger from the transmission crossmember.
  26.  
  27. Remove transmission dust shield.
  28.  
  29. Remove transmission mount and crossmember.
  30.  
  31. Lower transmission jack enough to remove shift tower bolts.
  32.  
  33. Lower transmission jack and remove transmission from under vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Pull transmission jack rearward until input shaft clears clutch.
  36.  
  37. Remove clutch release bearing, release fork and retainer clip.
  38.  
  39. Remove clutch housing from transmission.
  40.  

To install:

  1. Install clutch housing on transmission and tighten housing bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lubricate contact surfaces of release fork pivot ball stud and release fork with high temp grease.
  4.  
  5. Install release bearing, fork and retainer clip.
  6.  
  7. Position and secure transmission on transmission jack.
  8.  
  9. Lightly lubricate pilot bearing and transmission input shaft splines with Mopar® high temp grease.
  10.  
  11. Raise transmission and align transmission input shaft and clutch disc splines. Then slide transmission into place.
  12.  
  13. Install clutch housing-to-engine bolts and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
    NOTE
    Be sure the housing is properly seated on engine block before tightening bolts.

  15. Install shift tower and bolts. Tighten bolts to 5-7 ft. lbs. (7-10 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install rear cross member and tighten cross member bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install transmission mount bolts and to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install exhaust bracket to cross member.
  22.  
  23. Install crossover pipe to manifold extensions.
  24.  
  25. Remove support stands from engine and transmission.
  26.  
  27. Install transfer case, shift cable and vent hose if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Install wire connectors to transmission/transfer case.
  30.  
  31. Install propeller shaft/shafts.

  33. Install slave cylinder in clutch housing.
  34.  
  35. Install skid plate if equipped.

  37. Fill transmission and transfer case if equipped, with recommended lubricants.

  27. Lower transmission jack enough to remove shift tower bolts.
  28.  
  29. Lower transmission jack and remove transmission from under vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Pull transmission jack rearward until input shaft clears clutch.
  32.  
  33. Remove clutch release bearing, release fork and retainer clip.
  34.  
  35. Remove clutch housing from transmission.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Install clutch housing on transmission and tighten housing bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lubricate contact surfaces of release fork pivot ball stud and release fork with high temp grease.
  4.  
  5. Install release bearing, fork and retainer clip.
  6.  
  7. Position and secure transmission on transmission jack.
  8.  
  9. Lightly lubricate pilot bearing and transmission input shaft splines with Mopar®high temp grease.
  10.  
  11. Raise transmission and align transmission input shaft and clutch disc splines. Then slide transmission into place.
  12.  
  13. Install clutch housing-to-engine bolts and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
    NOTE
    Be sure the housing is properly seated on engine block before tightening bolts.

  14.  
  15. Install shift tower and bolts. Tighten bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install transmission mount and tighten bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install transfer case, shift linkage and vent hose.
  20.  
  21. Install wire connectors to transmission and transfer case.
  22.  
  23. Install skid plate/crossmember and tighten bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Remove support stands from engine and transmission.
  26.

  1. Shift transmission into first or third gear.
  2.  
  3. Remove the floor console and shift boot as necessary to access the bottom of the shift lever at the shift tower attachment.
  4.  
  5. Install nuts on two M6X1.0 bolts and thread the bolts into the threaded holes at the base of the shift lever.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nuts equally until the shift lever loosens on the shift tower stub shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shift lever from the shift tower.
  10.  
  11. Raise and support vehicle on suitable safety stands.
  12.  
  13. Support engine with adjustable jack stand. Position wood block between jack and oil pan to avoid damaging pan.
  14.  
  15. Remove crossmember/skid plate.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect necessary exhaust system components.
  18.  
  19. Remove slave cylinder from clutch housing.
  20.  
  21. Mark rear propeller shaft and rear axle yokes for installation alignment.
  22.  
  23. Mark front propeller shaft, axle, and transfer case yokes for installation alignment.
  24.  
  25. Remove propeller shaft(s)
  26.  
  27. Unclip wire harnesses from transmission and transfer case.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect transfer case vent hose.
  30.  
  31. Disengage any wire connectors attached to transmission or transfer case components.
  32.  
  33. Support transfer case with transmission jack.
  34.  
  35. Secure transfer case to jack with safety chains.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect transfer case shift linkage at transfer case.
  38.  
  39. Remove nuts attaching transfer case to transmission.
  40.  
  41. Remove transfer case.
  42.  
  43. Remove crankshaft position sensor.
    CAUTION
    It is important that the crankshaft position sensor be removed prior to transmission removal. The sensor can easily be damaged if left in place during removal operations.

  45. Support transmission with transmission jack.
  46.  
  47. Secure transmission to jack with safety chains.

  49. Disconnect rear cushion and bracket from transmission.
  50.  
  51. Remove clutch housing-to-engine bolts.
  52.  
  53. Pull transmission jack rearward until input shaft clears clutch. Then slide transmission out from under vehicle.
  54.  
  55. Remove clutch release bearing, release fork, and retainer clip.
  56.  
  57. Remove clutch housing from transmission.
  58.  

To install:

  1. Install clutch housing on transmission. Tighten housing bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm) torque.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate contact surfaces of release fork pivot ball stud and release fork with high temp grease.
  4.  
  5. Install release bearing, fork, and retainer clip.
  6.  
  7. Position and secure transmission on transmission jack.
  8.  
  9. Lightly lubricate pilot bearing and transmission input shaft splines with Mopar® high temp grease.
  10.  
  11. Raise transmission and align transmission input shaft and clutch disc splines. Then slide transmission into place.
  12.  
  13. Install and tighten clutch housing-to-engine bolts to the appropriate torque: Be sure the housing is properly seated on engine block before tightening bolts.
  14.  
  15. Tighten 3 / 8 inch diameter bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
  16.  
  17. Tighten 7 / 16 inch diameter bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
  18.  
  19. Tighten M12 bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
  20.  
  21. Be sure transmission is in first or third gear.
  22.  
  23. Install fasteners to hold rear cushion and bracket to transmission. Then tighten transmission-to-rear support bolts/nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) torque.
  24.  
  25. Install rear crossmember. Tighten crossmember-to-frame bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) torque.
  26.  
  27. Remove support stands from engine and transmission.
  28.  
  29. Install and connect crankshaft position sensor.
  30.  
  31. Position transfer case on transmission jack.
  32.  
  33. Secure transfer case to jack with safety chains.
  34.  
  35. Raise transfer case and align transfer case input shaft to the transmission output shaft.
  36.  
  37. Slide transfer case forward until case is seated on transmission.
  38.  
  39. Install nuts to attach transfer case to transmission. Tighten transfer case-to-transmission nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) torque.
  40.  
  41. Connect transfer case shift linkage at transfer case.
  42.  
  43. Connect transfer case vent hose.
  44.  
  45. Secure wire harnesses in clips/tie straps on transmission and transfer case.
  46.  
  47. Engage wire connectors attached to all necessary transmission or transfer case components.
  48.  
  49. Install rear propeller shaft slip yoke to transmission or transfer case output shaft.
  50.  
  51. Align marks on rear propeller shaft and rear axle yokes.
  52.  
  53. Install and tighten propeller shaft U-joint clamp bolts to 170 inch lbs. (19 Nm) torque.
  54.  
  55. Align marks on front propeller shaft, axle, and transfer case yokes.
  56.  
  57. Install and tighten propeller shaft U-joint clamp bolts to 170 inch lbs. (19 Nm) torque.
  58.  
  59. Install slave cylinder in clutch housing.
  60.  
  61. Install skid plate, if equipped. Tighten bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm) torque. Tighten stud nuts to 150 inch lbs. (17 Nm) torque.
  62.  
  63. Fill transmission and transfer case, if equipped, with recommended lubricants.
  64.  
  65. Lower vehicle.
  66.  
  67. Install nuts on two M6X1.0 bolts and thread the bolts into the threaded holes at the base of the shift lever.
  68.  
  69. Tighten the nuts equally until the shift lever will slide over the shift tower stub shaft.
  70.  
  71. Install the floor console and shift boot.
  72.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Shift transmission into neutral.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove skid plate if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove wiring connectors from the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Remove propeller shaft/shafts.
  12.  
  13. Remove transfer case shift cable and vent hose from transfer case, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove slave cylinder from clutch housing.
  16.  
  17. Support engine with jack stand. Position wood block between jack and oil pan to avoid damaging pan.
  18.  
  19. Support transmission with a transmission jack.
  20.  
  21. Remove exhaust hanger from the transmission crossmember.
  22.  
  23. Remove transmission mount and crossmember.
  24.  
  25. Lower transmission jack enough to remove shift tower bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove clutch housing-to-engine bolts.
  28.  
  29. Pull transmission jack rearward until input shaft clears clutch.
  30.  
  31. Remove clutch release bearing, release fork and retainer clip.
  32.  
  33. Remove clutch housing from transmission.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Install clutch housing on transmission and tighten housing bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lubricate contact surfaces of release fork pivot ball stud and release fork with high temp grease.
  4.  
  5. Install release bearing, fork and retainer clip.
  6.  
  7. Position and secure transmission on transmission jack.
  8.  
  9. Lightly lubricate the transmission input shaft splines with Mopar® high temp grease.
  10.  
  11. Raise transmission and align transmission input shaft and clutch disc splines. Then slide transmission into place.
  12.  
  13. Install clutch housing-to-engine bolts and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
    NOTE
    Be sure the housing is properly seated on engine block before tightening bolts.

  15. Install shift tower and bolts. Tighten bolts to 5-7 ft. lbs. (7-10 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install rear crossmember and tighten crossmember bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install transmission mount bolts and to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install exhaust bracket to crossmember.
  22.  
  23. Remove support stands from engine and transmission.
  24.  
  25. Install transfer case, shift cable and vent hose if equipped.
  26.  
  27. Install wire connectors to transmission/transfer case.
  28.  
  29. Install propeller shaft(s).
  30.  
  31. Install slave cylinder in clutch housing.
  32.  
  33. Fill transmission and transfer case if equipped, with recommended lubricants.
  34.  
  35. Install skid plate if equipped.
  36.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Shift transmission into first or third gear.
  4.  
  5. Remove floor console and shift boot as necessary to access the bottom of the shift lever at the shift tower attachment.
  6.  
  7. Remove shift tower bolts and remove shift tower and shift lever assembly.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support vehicle on suitable safety stands.
  10.  
  11. Support engine with adjustable jack stand. Position wood block between jack and oil pan to avoid damaging pan.
  12.  
  13. Remove skid plate, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove crossmember.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect necessary exhaust system components.
  18.  
  19. Remove slave cylinder from clutch housing.
  20.  
  21. Remove propeller shafts.
  22.  
  23. Unclip wire harnesses from transmission and transfer case.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect transfer case shift linkage at transfer case.
  26.  
  27. Remove nuts attaching transfer case to transmission.
  28.  
  29. Remove transfer case.
  30.  
  31. Remove crankshaft position sensor.
    NOTE
    The crankshaft position sensor must be removed prior to transmission removal. Failure to heed caution may result in damage.

  33. Support engine with adjustable jack stand. Position wood block between jack and oil pan to avoid damaging pan.

  35. Support transmission with transmission jack.
  36.  
  37. Secure transmission to jack with safety chains.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect rear cushion and bracket from transmission.
  40.  
  41. Remove rear crossmember.
  42.  
  43. Remove clutch housing-to-engine bolts.
  44.  
  45. Pull transmission jack rearward until input shaft clears clutch. Then slide transmission out from under vehicle.
  46.  
  47. Remove clutch release bearing, release fork and retainer clip.
  48.  
  49. Remove clutch housing from transmission.
  50.  

To install:

  1. Install clutch housing on transmission and tighten housing bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lubricate contact surfaces of release fork pivot ball stud and release fork with high temp grease.
  4.  
  5. Install release bearing, fork and retainer clip.
  6.  
  7. Position and secure transmission on transmission jack.
  8.  
  9. Lightly lubricate pilot bearing and transmission input shaft splines with Mopar®high temp grease.
  10.  
  11. Raise transmission and align transmission input shaft and clutch disc splines. Then slide transmission into place.
    NOTE
    Be sure the housing is properly seated on engine block before tightening bolts.

  13. Install and tighten clutch housing-to-engine bolts to:

    3 / 8 in. diameter bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    7 / 16 in. diameter bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
     
    M12 bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     

  14.  
  15. Be sure transmission is in first or third gear.
  16.  
  17. Install crossmember and tighten crossmember-to-frame bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install fasteners to hold rear cushion and bracket to transmission. Then tighten transmission-to- rear support bolts/nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Remove support stands from engine and transmission.
  22.  
  23. Install and connect crankshaft position sensor.
  24.  
  25. Install transfer case.
  26.  
  27. Install propeller shafts.
  28.  
  29. Install slave cylinder in clutch housing.
  30.  
  31. Install skid plate, if equipped and tighten bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm). Tighten stud nuts to 150 inch lbs. (17 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Fill transmission and transfer case if equipped, with recommended lubricants.
  34.  
  35. Install nuts on two M6 x 1.0 bolts and thread the bolts into the threaded holes at the base of the shift lever.
  36.  
  37. Tighten the nuts equally until the shift lever will slide over the shift tower stub shaft.
  38.  
  39. Install the floor console and shift boot.
  40.
