Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



C-Clip Type
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Differential cover
     
    Differential gear shaft retainer
     
    Differential gear shaft
     
    C-clip
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Axle seal
     
    Axle bearing
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Axle bearing
     
    Axle seal
     
    Axle shaft
     
    C-clip
     
    Differential gear shaft. Use Loctite® and tighten the retainer to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Differential cover. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove differential housing cover and drain lubricant.
  6.  
  7. Rotate differential case so pinion mate shaft lock screw is accessible. Remove lock screw and pinion mate shaft from differential case.
  8.  
  9. Push axle shaft inward and remove axle shaft C-lock from the axle shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove axle shaft from side gear and axle tube.
  12.  
  13. Remove axle shaft seal from axle tube with a seal pick.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old sealer/burrs from axle tube.
  2.  
  3. Coat new seal lip with axle lubricant and install seal with a seal driver.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate bearing bore and seal lip with gear lubricant.
  6.  
  7. Install axle shaft through seal, bearing and engage into side gear splines.
  8.  
  9. Install C-lock in axle shaft end, then push axle shaft outward to seat C-lock in side gear.
  10.  
  11. Install pinion mate shaft into differential case and through thrust washers and differential pinions.
  12.  
  13. Align hole in shaft with hole in the differential case and install lock screw with Loctite on the threads. Tighten lock screw to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the differential cover.
  16.  
  17. Install rear brake components.
  18.  

Non C-Clip Type
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Axle retainer nuts
     
    Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Split the bearing retainer with a chisel and remove the retainer ring.
  6.  
  7. Press the bearing off the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the axle seal and retaining plate.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the retaining plate and axle seal onto the axle shaft.
  2.  
  3. Pack the wheel bearing with axle grease and press the bearing on to the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Press the retaining ring onto the axle shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly. Tighten the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Rear wheel
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.
  10.  


CAUTION
Never reuse axle retaining bolts and nuts. Used nuts can loosen. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
