Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and lower or remove necessary exhaust components.
  8.  
  9. Remove engine-to-transmission bending braces or engine collar.
  10.  
  11. Remove starter motor.
  12.  
  13. On 4.0L engine equipped vehicles, disconnect and remove crankshaft position sensor. Retain sensor attaching bolt.
    NOTE
    The crankshaft position sensor can be damaged during transmission removal (or installation) if the sensor is left in place. To avoid damage, remove the sensor before removing the transmission.

  15. If transmission is being removed for overhaul, remove transmission oil pan, drain fluid and reinstall pan.
  16.  
  17. Remove torque converter access cover.
  18.  
  19. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench on dampener bolt.
  20.  
  21. Mark propeller shaft and axle yokes for assembly alignment. Then disconnect and remove propeller shafts.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect wires from the input and output speed sensors.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect wires from the transmission range sensor and the solenoid/pressure switch assembly.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect gearshift cable from transmission manual valve lever.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect shift rod from transfer case shift lever or remove shift lever from transfer case.
  30.  
  31. Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
  32.  
  33. Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on skid plate and transmission support.
  34.  
  35. Remove bolts securing rear support and cushion to transmission and skid plate. Raise transmission slightly, slide exhaust hanger arm from bracket and remove rear support.
  36.  
  37. Remove bolts attaching skid plate to frame and remove skid plate.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect transfer case vent hose.
  40.  
  41. Remove transfer case.
  42.  
  43. Remove fill tube bracket bolts and pull tube out of transmission. Retain fill tube seal. Remove the bolt attaching transfer case vent tube to converter housing.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect fluid cooler lines at transmission.
  46.  
  47. Remove all converter housing bolts.
  48.  
  49. Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
  50.  
  51. Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
  52.  
  53. Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
  54.  
  55. To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.
  56.  

To install:

  1. Check torque converter hub and hub drive notches for sharp edges burrs, scratches, or nicks. Polish the hub and notches with 320/400 grit paper and crocus cloth if necessary. The hub must be smooth to avoid damaging pump seal at installation.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate converter drive hub and oil pump seal lip with transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Align converter and oil pump.
  6.  
  7. Carefully insert converter in oil pump. Then rotate converter back and forth until fully seated in pump gears.
  8.  
  9. Check converter seating with steel scale and straightedge. Surface of converter lugs should be 1 / 2 in. to rear of straightedge when converter is fully seated.
  10.  
  11. Temporarily secure converter with C-clamp.
  12.  
  13. Lightly grease crankshaft flange hole.
  14.  
  15. Position transmission on jack and secure it with safety chains.
  16.  
  17. Check condition of converter driveplate. Replace the plate if cracked, distorted or damaged.
    NOTE
    Be sure transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.

  19. Raise transmission and align converter with drive plate and converter housing with engine block.
  20.  
  21. Move transmission forward. Then raise, lower or tilt transmission to align converter housing with engine block dowels.
  22.  
  23. Carefully work transmission forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft.
  24.  
  25. Install and tighten bolts that attach transmission converter housing to engine block to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
    NOTE
    Be sure the converter housing is fully seated on the engine block dowels before tightening any bolts.

  27. Install torque converter attaching bolts. Tighten bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  28.  
  29. On 4.0L engine equipped vehicles, install the crankshaft position sensor.
  30.  
  31. Install transmission fill tube and seal. Install new fill tube seal in transmission before installation.
  32.  
  33. Connect transmission cooler lines to transmission.
  34.  
  35. Install transfer case onto transmission.
  36.  
  37. Install skid plate. Torque to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Attach transmission rear support to skid plate. Torque to 26 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).

  39. Remove engine support fixture.
  40.  
  41. Remove transmission jack.
  42.  
  43. Connect input and output speed sensor wires.
  44.  
  45. Connect wires to the transmission range sensor and the solenoid/pressure switch assembly.
  46.  
  47. Install converter housing access cover.
  48.  
  49. Install exhaust pipes and support brackets, if removed.
  50.  
  51. Install starter motor and cooler line bracket.
  52.  
  53. Install new plastic retainer grommet on any shift linkage rod or lever that was disconnected. Grommets should not be reused. Use pry tool to remove rod from grommet and cut away old grommet. Use pliers to snap new grommet into lever and to snap rod into grommet at assembly.

  55. Connect gearshift cable.
  56.  
  57. Connect transfer case shift linkage.
  58.  
  59. Adjust gearshift linkage, if necessary.
  60.  
  61. Align and connect propeller shaft(s).
  62.  
  63. Fill transfer case to bottom edge of fill plug hole.
  64.  
  65. Lower vehicle and connect battery negative cable.
  66.  
  67. Fill transmission to correct level with Mopar® ATF +4.
  68.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle
  6.  
  7. Remove any necessary skid plates.
  8.  
  9. Mark propeller shaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front propeller shaft, if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect wires from the input and output speed sensors.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect wires from the transmission range sensor and the solenoid/pressure switch assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts holding the exhaust crossover pipe to the pre-catalytic converter pipe flanges.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts holding the exhaust crossover pipe to the catalytic converter flange.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect gearshift cable from transmission manual valve lever.
  24.  
  25. Disengage the shift cable from the cable support bracket.
  26.  
  27. Remove the starter motor.
  28.  
  29. Remove the engine to transmission collar.
  30.  
  31. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench on dampener bolt.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
  34.  
  35. Remove transfer case.
  36.  
  37. Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
  38.  
  39. Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on crossmember and supports.
  40.  
  41. Remove bolts securing rear support and cushion to transmission and crossmember.
  42.  
  43. Remove bolts attaching crossmember to frame and remove crossmember.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines at transmission fittings and clips.
  46.  
  47. Remove all remaining converter housing bolts.
  48.  
  49. Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
  50.  
  51. Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
  52.  
  53. Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
  54.  
  55. To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.

To install:

  1. Check torque converter hub and hub drive flats for sharp edges burrs, scratches, or nicks. Polish the hub and flats with 320/400 grit paper and crocus cloth if necessary. Verify that the converter hub O-ring is properly installed and is free of any debris. The hub must be smooth to avoid damaging pump seal at installation.
  2.  
  3. If a replacement transmission is being installed, transfer any components necessary, such as the manual shift lever and shift cable bracket, from the original transmission onto the replacement transmission.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate oil pump seal lip with transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Align converter and oil pump.
  8.  
  9. Carefully insert converter in oil pump. Then rotate converter back and forth until fully seated in pump gears.
  10.  
  11. Check converter seating with steel scale and straightedge. Surface of converter lugs should be at least 13mm ( 1 / 2 in.) to rear of straightedge when converter is fully seated.
  12.  
  13. Temporarily secure converter with C-clamp.
  14.  
  15. Position transmission on jack and secure it with chains
  16.  
  17. Check condition of converter driveplate. Replace the plate if cracked, distorted or damaged.
    NOTE
    Be sure transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.

  19. Apply a light coating of Mopar® High Temp Grease to the torque converter hub pocket in the rear pocket of the engine-s crankshaft.
  20.  
  21. Raise transmission and align the torque converter with the drive plate and transmission converter housing with the engine block.
  22.  
  23. Move transmission forward. Then raise, lower or tilt transmission to align the converter housing with engine block dowels.
  24.  
  25. Carefully work transmission forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft. Verify that no wires, or the transmission vent hose, have become trapped between the engine block and the transmission.
  26.  
  27. Install two bolts to attach the transmission to the engine.
  28.  
  29. Install remaining torque converter housing to engine bolts. Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install transfer case, if equipped. Tighten transfer case nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install rear transmission crossmember. Tighten crossmember to frame bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install rear support to transmission. Tighten bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Lower transmission onto crossmember and install bolts attaching transmission mount to crossmember. Tighten clevis bracket to crossmember bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Tighten the clevis bracket to rear support bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Remove engine support fixture.
  40.  
  41. Connect gearshift cable to support bracket and transmission manual lever.
  42.  
  43. Connect input and output speed sensor wires.
  44.  
  45. Connect wires to the transmission range sensor and the solenoid/pressure switch assembly.
  46.  
  47. Install torque converter-to-driveplate bolts. Tighten bolts to 65 inch lbs. (88 Nm).
  48.  
  49. Install starter motor and cooler line bracket.
  50.  
  51. Connect cooler lines to transmission.
  52.  
  53. Install transmission fill tube.
  54.  
  55. Install exhaust components.
  56.  
  57. Align and connect propeller shaft(s).
  58.  
  59. Adjust gearshift cable if necessary.
  60.  
  61. Install any skid plates removed previously.
