Draining Water From The System



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    WARNING
    Store fuel in approved and properly marked containers. Wear safety goggles and adequate protective clothing when servicing fuel system.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the Water In Fuel (WIF) wiring harness connector located under the fuel filter.
  6.  
  7. Connect a drain hose to the WIF sensor.
  8.  
  9. Place the other end of the drain hose in a approved and properly marked container.
  10.  
  11. Open the bleed screw on top of the fuel filter housing.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the WIF sensor on the bottom of the fuel filter to begin draining.
  14.  
  15. Allow the filter to drain into the container until fuel is visible.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the WIF sensor, remove the drain hose and clean any spillage.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the bleeder screw on top of the fuel filter housing.
  20.  
  21. Connect the WIF wiring harness connector.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the Water In Fuel (WIF) sensor wiring harness connector.
  6.  
  7. Drain the fuel filter/water separator.
  8.  
  9. Unscrew the filter assembly from the head assembly by rotating the housing counterclockwise.
  10.  
  11. Separate the WIF sensor and seal from the housing by rotating counterclockwise
  12.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the fuel filter seal with clean diesel fuel.
  2.  
  3. Install the WIF sensor hand tight .
  4.  
  5. Screw filter assembly onto the fuel filter/water separator head. Tighten filter to 159 in. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the WIF wiring harness connector.
  8.  
  9. Prime the fuel system.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and allow to warm.
  12.  
  13. Turn engine off and inspect for leaks.
