Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Remove accessory drive belts.
  2.  
  3. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove damper using Special Tool 3-Jaw Puller 1026 and Insert 6827-A
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install crankshaft vibration damper using M12 1.75 x 150 mm bolt, washer, thrust bearing and nut from Special Tool 6792.
  2.  
  3. Install crankshaft vibration damper bolt and tighten to. 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install accessory drive belts
  6.  

2.8L Diesel Engine
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove viscous cooling fan and shroud .
  4.  
  5. Remove accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove vibration damper retaining bolts and damper .
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install vibration damper and retaining bolts. Torque bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32.4 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Install viscous fan and fan shroud.
  6.  
  7. Connect negative battery cable.
  8.  

3.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove accessory drive belt.
    NOTE
    Transmission cooler line snaps into shroud lower right hand corner.

  4.  
  5. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove damper using Special Tools 8513 Insert and 1026 Three Jaw Puller .
  8.  

To install:


CAUTION
To prevent severe damage to the Crankshaft, Damper or Special Tool 8512, thoroughly clean the damper bore and the crankshaft nose before installing Damper.

  1. Align crankshaft damper slot with key in crankshaft. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
    CAUTION
    Special Tool 8512A, is assembled in a specific sequence. Failure to assemble this tool in this sequence can result in tool failure and severe damage to either the tool or the crankshaft.

  3. Assemble Special Tool 8512-A as follows, The nut is threaded onto the shaft first. Then the roller bearing is placed onto the threaded rod (The hardened bearing surface of the bearing MUST face the nut). Then the hardened washer slides onto the threaded rod. Once assembled coat the threaded rod-s threads with Mopar® Nickel Anti- Seize or (Loctite No. 771).

  5. Using Special Tool 8512A, press damper onto crankshaft .
  6.  
  7. Install then tighten crankshaft damper bolt to 130 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Connect negative cable to battery.
  12.  

4.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine drive belt and fan shroud.
  4.  
  5. Remove the vibration damper retaining bolt and washer.
  6.  
  7. Use Vibration Damper Removal Tool 7697 to remove the damper from the crankshaft
  8.  

To install:

  1. Apply Mopar® Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant to the keyway in the crankshaft and insert the key. With the key in position, align the keyway on the vibration damper hub with the crankshaft key and tap the damper onto the crankshaft.

  3. Install the vibration damper retaining bolt and washer.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the damper retaining bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) torque.
  6.  
  7. Install the serpentine drive belt and fan shroud.
  8.  
  9. Connect negative cable to battery.
  10.  
  11. Raise and support vehicle
    NOTE
    Both left and right side bending braces are removed the same way. Only the right side is shown


    NOTE
    The exhaust does not require removal to perform this procedure.

  12.  
  13. Remove the exhaust hanger bracket retaining bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove locknut and transmission bending brace bar.
  16.  
  17. Remove engine-to-bending brace retaining bolt, bending brace bar and cross bar
  18.
