Crankshaft Front Seal

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper.
  4.  
  5. Remove timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove crankshaft sprocket using Special Tool 6793 and insert C-4685-C2, or equivalent.
    NOTE
    Do not nick shaft seal surface or seal bore.

  8.  
  9. Using Tool 6771, or equivalent, remove front crankshaft oil seal. Be careful not to damage the seal surface of cover.

  1. Install new seal by using Special Tool 6780, or equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Place seal into opening with seal spring towards the inside of engine. Install seal until flush with cover.
  4.  
  5. Install crankshaft sprocket using Special Tool 6792, or equivalent.
  6.  
  7. Install timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Install crankshaft vibration damper.
  10.  

3.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts and set the compressor aside.
    NOTE
    It is not necessary to disconnect the A/C lines from the compressor.

  8.  
  9. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the engine fan electrical connector, located inside the radiator shroud.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine fan.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft damper bolt.
  16.  
  17. Using Special Tool 8513 Insert and 1026 three-jaw puller, remove the crankshaft damper.
  18.  
  19. Remove the seal using Special Tool 8511.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Using Special Tools 8348 and 8512, install the crankshaft front seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft damper as follows:
    1. Align the crankshaft damper slot with the key in the crankshaft. Slide the damper onto the crankshaft.
    2.  
    3. Assemble Special Tool 8512-A. The nut is threaded onto the threaded rod first. Then the roller bearing is placed onto the threaded rod (The hardened bearing surface of the bearing MUST face the nut). Then the hardened washer slides onto the threaded rod. Once assembled coat the threaded rod's threads with Mopar® Nickel Anti-Seize or equivalent.

    5. Using Special Tool 8512-A, press the damper onto the crankshaft.

  5. Install the crankshaft damper bolt and tighten to 130 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the engine fan.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper radiator hose.
  10.  
  11. Install the A/C compressor and tighten the mounting bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.

4.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt(s), fan and fan shroud. If equipped, remove the accessory drive belt pulley.
  4.  
  5. Remove the vibration damper retaining bolt and washer. Remove the vibration damper using a suitable puller.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accessory drive brackets attached to the timing cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the A/C compressor, if equipped, and alternator bracket from the cylinder head and move to one side.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan-to-timing case cover bolts and the cover-to-cylinder block bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the timing case cover front seal and gasket from the engine.
  14.  
  15. Cut off the oil pan side gasket end tabs and oil pan front seal tabs flush with the front face of the cylinder block. Remove the gasket tabs.
  16.  
  17. Clean the timing case cover, oil pan and cylinder block gasket surfaces.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft seal oil seal from the cover by prying it out with a suitable tool.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install a new seal in the timing cover using a suitable seal installation tool.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealer to both sides of the replacement cover gasket and position the gasket on the cylinder block. Cut the end tabs off the replacement oil pan gasket corresponding to those cut off the original gasket. Attach the end tabs to the oil pan with sealer.
  4.  
  5. Coat the front cover seal end tab recesses generously with sealer and position the seal on the timing cover.
  6.  
  7. Apply engine oil to the seal-oil pan contact surface, then position the cover on the cylinder block.
  8.  
  9. Insert timing case cover alignment tool J22248 or equivalent, in the crankshaft opening. Install the cover-to-cylinder block bolts and tighten them to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm). Install and tighten the oil pan-to-cover bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove the cover alignment tool and position a replacement oil seal on the tool with the seal lip facing outward. Apply a light coat of sealer to the seal and a light coat of oil to the crankshaft. Install the seal on the timing cover.

  13. Apply a light film of oil to the vibration damper hub seal contact surface. Install the vibration damper using a suitable installation tool.
  14.  
  15. Install the crankshaft vibration damper.
  16.  
  17. Install the accessory brackets.
  18.  
  19. Install the fan and fan shroud.
  20.  
  21. Install the drive belt(s) and adjust to the proper tension.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  26.
