Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Remove the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flexplate.
  4.  
  5. Insert a 3 / 16 flat bladed screwdriver between the dust lip and the metal case of the crankshaft seal. Angle the screwdriver through the dust lip against metal case of the seal. Pry out seal.
    NOTE
    Do not permit the screwdriver blade to contact the crankshaft seal surface. Contact of the screwdriver blade against the crankshaft edge (chamfer) is permitted.

To install:


NOTE
If burrs or scratches are present on the crankshaft edge (chamfer), cleanup with 400 grit sand paper to prevent seal damage during the installation of the new seal.

  1. Lubricate the crankshaft flange with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Place Special Tool 6926-1 Seal Guide, or equivalent, on the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Position the seal over the guide tool. The guide tool should remain on the crankshaft during installation of the seal. Ensure that the lip of the seal is facing towards the crankcase during installation.
    NOTE
    If the seal is driven into the block past flush, this may cause an oil leak.

  6.  
  7. Drive the seal into the block using Special Tool 6926-2 and handle C-4171, or equivalent, until the tool bottoms out against the block.
  8.  
  9. Install the flexplate. Apply Mopar® Lock & Seal Adhesive to the bolt threads and tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the transmission.
  12.  

3.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     

  4.  
  5. Thread Oil Seal Remover 8506 into the rear main seal as far as possible and remove the rear main seal.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Seal Guide 8349-2 onto the crankshaft
     
    Rear main seal on the seal guide
     
    Rear main seal, using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer 8349 and Driver Handle C-4171; tap it into place until the installer is flush with the cylinder block
     
    Flexplate. Torque the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    Transmission

  3. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  

4.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission inspection cover
     
    Oil pan
     
    Main bearing cap brace
     
    No. 7 main bearing cap
     

  6.  
  7. Loosen the other main bearing cap bolts for clearance and remove the rear main seal halves.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New upper seal half to the cylinder block
     
    New lower seal half to the bearing cap after applying sealant to the bearing cap

    No. 7 main bearing cap. Torque all main bearing cap bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
     
    Main bearing cap brace. Tighten the nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Oil pan
     
    Transmission inspection cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.
