Removal & Installation



2.8L Diesel Engine

WARNING
Before removing the cylinder head cover/ intake manifold the engine must rotated to 90° after TDC to assure proper alignment of the engine timing components. Failure to do so could result in valve and/or piston damage during reassembly.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove accessory drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the vibration damper.
  10.  
  11. Remove cooling fan support.
  12.  
  13. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
  14.  
  15. Rotate the crankshaft to 90 degrees ATDC.
  16.  
  17. Remove outer timing belt cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove timing belt.
  20.  
  21. Remove inner timing belt cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove cylinder head cover/intake manifold.
    NOTE
    Lifters must be kept in order of removal and stored in the up right position.

  25. Remove rocker arms and lifters .
  26.  

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect gasket sealing surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install new gasket on cylinder head.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate lifter ball end of lifter(s), valve(s), and rocker arm roller(s) with Mopar® Engine Oil Supplement or equivalent.
    NOTE
    Add a small amount of grease to the tip of each valve to assist with rocker arm positioning.

  6.  
  7. Connect rocker arm(s) to lifter and position on valve(s).
    NOTE
    Care must be taken when installing the cylinder head cover/intake manifold. Failure to align the cover correctly may dislodge the rocker arm(s) from the valve stem.

  8.  
  9. Install cylinder head cover/intake manifold.
  10.  
  11. Install inner timing belt cover.
    NOTE
    Rotate the crankshaft to the 90 degree ATDC position.

  12.  
  13. Install timing belt.
  14.  
  15. Install outer timing belt cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the power steering pump pulley.
  18.  
  19. Install vibration damper.
  20.  
  21. Install cooling fan support.
  22.  
  23. Install accessory drive belt.
  24.  
  25. Install cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
  26.  
  27. Refill cooling system.
  28.  
  29. Connect negative battery cable.
  30.  

3.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at Top Dead Center (TDC) and both valves are closed.
  6.  
  7. Use special tool 8516 to depress the valve and remove the rocker arm.
  8.  
  9. Repeat for each rocker arm to be serviced.
    NOTE
    Keep valvetrain components in order for reassembly.

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at BDC.
  2.  
  3. Compress the valve spring and install each rocker arm in its original position.
  4.  
  5. Repeat for each rocker arm to be installed.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

4.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep valvetrain components in order for reassembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve cover
     
    Rocker arm bolts, loosen them evenly to avoid damaging the alignment bridges
     
    Rocker arms

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arms, pivots and bridges in their original positions. Torque the bolts for each bridged pair one turn at a time to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Valve cover
     
    Negative battery cable
