Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the PCV vacuum hose from the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cover mounting bolts and remove the cover from the head.
  4.  

To install:


NOTE
A cured gasket is part of the cylinder head cover. Remove any original sealer from the cover sealing surface using a fabric cleaner. The original grey gasket material should not be removed. If pieces are missing, the cover must be replaced.

  1. Thoroughly clean the sealing surface of the cylinder head and the seal on the cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head cover and tighten the mounting bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the PCV vacuum hose to the valve cover.
  6.  

2.8L Diesel Engine

The valve cover is integral with the intake manifold. Refer to the Intake Manifold procedure.

3.7L Engine
Left Side
  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect injector connectors and unclip the injector harness.
  6.  
  7. Route injector harness in front of valve cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the left side breather tube and remove the breather tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve cover mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove valve cover and gasket.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, providing no cuts, tears, or deformations have occurred.

To install:


WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the valve covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.

  1. Clean valve cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Tighten valve cover bolts and double ended studs to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install left side breather and connect breather tube.
  6.  
  7. Connect injector electrical connectors and injector harness retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Install the resonator and air inlet hose.
  10.  
  11. Connect negative cable to battery.
  12.  

Right Side
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove air cleaner assembly, resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  4.  
  5. Drain cooling system, below the level of the heater hoses.
  6.  
  7. Remove accessory drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove air conditioning compressor retaining bolts and move compressor to the left.
  10.  
  11. Remove heater hoses.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect injector and ignition coil connectors.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect and remove positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
  16.  
  17. Remove oil fill tube.
  18.  
  19. Unclip injector and ignition coil harness and move away from valve cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove valve cover retaining bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove valve cover and gasket.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, providing no cuts, tears, or deformations have occurred.

To install:


WARNING

  1. Clean valve cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.

  3. Tighten valve cover bolts and double ended studs to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs).

  5. Install right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect injector, ignition coil electrical connectors and harness retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil fill tube.
  10.  
  11. Install PCV hose.
  12.  
  13. Install heater hoses.
  14.  
  15. Install air conditioning compressor retaining bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install accessory drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Fill Cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Install air cleaner assembly, resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  22.  
  23. Connect battery negative cable.
  24.  

4.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the PCV vacuum and fresh air inlet hoses from the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove any control cables and brackets secured to the cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cover mounting bolts and remove the cover from the head.
  6.  

To install:


NOTE
A cured gasket is part of the cylinder head cover. Remove any original sealer from the cover sealing surface using a fabric cleaner. The original grey gasket material should not be removed. If pieces are missing the cover must be replaced.

  1. Thoroughly clean the sealing surface of the cylinder head and the seal on the cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head cover and tighten the mounting bolts to 85 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. The remaining installation is the reverse of removal.
