CV-Joints



Overhaul
Inner Joint
  1. Clamp shaft in a vise (with soft jaws) and support C/V joint.
  2.  
  3. Remove clamps with a cut-off wheel or grinder.
  4.  
  5. Slide boot down the shaft .
  6.  
  7. Remove lubricant from housing to expose the C/V snap ring and remove snap ring .
  8.  
  9. Remove bearings from the cage.
  10.  
  11. Rotate cage 30° and slide cage off the inner race and down the shaft .
  12.  
  13. Remove spread inner race snap ring and remove race from the shaft .
  14.  
  15. Remove boot from the shaft and discard.
  16.  
  17. Clean and inspect housing, cage, bearings, housing snap-ring, inner race snap-ring and inner race for wear or damage .

To install:

  1. Apply a coat of grease supplied with the joint/ boot to the C/V joint components before assembling them.
  2.  
  3. Place new clamps on the new boot and slide boot down the shaft.
  4.  
  5. Slide cage onto the shaft with the small diameter end towards the boot.
  6.  
  7. Install the inner race onto the shaft. Pull on the race to verify snap ring has engaged.
  8.  
  9. Align cage with the inner race and slide over the race.
  10.  
  11. Turn the cage 30° to align the cage windows with the race.
  12.  
  13. Apply grease to the inner race and bearings and install the bearings.
  14.  
  15. Apply grease to the housing bore then install the bearing assembly into the housing.
  16.  
  17. Install the housing snap ring and verify it is seated in the groove.
  18.  
  19. Fill the housing and boot with the remaining grease.
  20.  
  21. Slide the boot onto the C/V housing into it-s original position. Ensure boot is not twisted and remove any excess air.
  22.  
  23. Secure both boot clamps with Clamp Installer C-4975A. Place tool on clamp bridge and tighten tool until the jaws of the tool are closed.

  1. Place shaft in vise with soft jaws and support C/V joint.
    CAUTION
    Do not damage C/V housing or half shaft.

  3. Remove clamps
  4.  
  5. with a cut-off wheel or grinder .
  6.  
  7. Slide the boot down the shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove lubricant to expose the C/V joint snap ring.
  10.  
  11. Spread snap ring and slide the joint off the shaft .
  12.  
  13. Slide boot off the shaft and discard old boot.
  14.  
  15. Mark alignment marks on the inner race/ hub (2), bearing cage and housing with dabs of paint .
  16.  
  17. Clamp C/V joint in a vertical position in a soft jawed vise.
  18.  
  19. Press down one side of the bearing cage to gain access to the ball at the opposite side.
    NOTE
    If joint is tight, use a hammer and brass drift to loosen the bearing hub. Do not contact the bearing cage with the drift.

  21. Remove ball from the bearing cage .
  22.  
  23. Repeat step above until all six balls are removed from the bearing cage.
  24.  
  25. Lift cage and inner race upward and out from the housing .
  26.  
  27. Turn inner race 90° in the cage and rotate the inner race/hub out of the cage .
  28.  

To install:

  1. Apply a light coat of grease to the C/V joint components before assembling them.
  2.  
  3. Align inner race, cage and housing according to the alignment reference marks.
  4.  
  5. Insert inner race into the cage and rotate race into the cage.
  6.  
  7. Rotate inner race/hub in the cage .
  8.  
  9. Insert cage into the housing .
  10.  
  11. Rotate cage 90° into the housing .
  12.  
  13. Apply lubricant included with replacement boot/joint to the ball races. Spread lubricant equally between all the races.
  14.  
  15. Tilt inner race/hub and cage and install the balls .
  16.  
  17. Place new clamps onto new boot and slide boot onto the shaft to it-s original position.
  18.  
  19. Apply the rest of lubricant to the C/V joint and boot.
  20.  
  21. Push the joint onto the shaft until the snap ring seats in the groove . Pull on the joint to verify the span ring has engaged.
  22.  
  23. Position boot on the joint in it-s original position. Ensure boot is not twisted and remove any excess air.
  24.  
  25. Secure both boot clamps with Clamp Installer C-4975A. Place tool on clamp bridge and tighten tool until the jaws of the tool are closed.
  26.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Hub nut
     
    Stabilizer link
     
    Lower clevis bolt
     
    Ball joint from the lower arm
     

  4.  
  5. Pull on the hub and push the halfshaft from the knuckle
    NOTE
    The right side has a splined axle shaft that will stay in the axle.

To install:

  1. Apply a light coating of wheel bearing grease on the splines of the inner joint, and in the hub bearing bore.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Push firmly enough to engage the snapring. Pull on it to verify engagement.



    Halfshaft on the axle shaft splines
     



    Halfshaft into the knuckle
     
    Lower ball joint and pinch bolt
     
    Lower clevis bolt
     
    Stabilizer link
     
    Hub nut. Torque to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
     
    Wheel
