Pinion Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove brake calipers and rotors.
  6.  
  7. Remove propeller shaft.
  8.  
  9. Rotate pinion gear a minimum of ten times and verify the pinion rotates smoothly.
  10.  
  11. Record torque to rotate the pinion gear with an inch pound torque wrench.
  12.  
  13. Using a short piece of pipe and Spanner Wrench 6958 to hold the pinion companion flange and remove the pinion nut.
  14.  
  15. Remove pinion companion flange with Remover C-452 and Spanner Wrench 6958, or equivalent.
  16.  
  17. Pry pinion seal out with a seal pick.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Apply a light coating of gear lubricant on the lip of pinion seal. Install seal with a seal driver.
  2.  
  3. Install pinion companion flange on the pinion gear with Installer W-162-D, Cup 8109 and Wrench 6958, or equivalent.
    WARNING
    Do not exceed the minimum tightening torque 160 ft. lbs. (216 Nm) while installing pinion nut at this point. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage.

  5. Install a new nut on the pinion gear. Tighten the nut only enough to remove the shaft end play.
    WARNING
    Never loosen pinion nut to decrease pinion rotating torque and never exceed specified preload torque. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage.

  7. Rotate pinion a minimum of ten time and verify pinion rotates smoothly. Rotate the pinion shaft with an inch pound torque wrench. Rotating torque should be equal to the reading recorded during removal plus 5 inch lbs. (0.56 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If rotating torque is low, use Spanner Wrench 6958 to hold the pinion companion flange and tighten the pinion nut in 60 inch lbs. (6.8 Nm) increments until proper rotating torque is achieved.
    WARNING
    If maximum tightening torque is reached prior to reaching the required rotating torque, the collapsible spacer may have been damaged. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage.

  11. Install propeller shaft.
  12.  
  13. Fill differential with gear lubricant.
  14.  

181FBI Front Axle
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove brake rotors and calipers.
  6.  
  7. Remove propeller shaft from the yoke.
  8.  
  9. Rotate pinion gear three or four times.
  10.  
  11. Record rotating torque of the pinion gear with an inch pound torque wrench, for installation reference.
  12.  
  13. Hold pinion yoke with Wrench 6958 and remove pinion nut and washer, or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Remove pinion yoke with Remover C-452 and Wrench C-3281, or equivalent.
  16.  
  17. Remove seal with a pry tool or a slide hammer mounted screw.

To install:

  1. Apply a light coating of gear lubricant on the lip of pinion seal. Install seal with an appropriate installer.
  2.  
  3. Install yoke on pinion gear with Installer W-162-D, Cup 8109 and Holder 6958, or equivalent.
    WARNING
    Do not exceed the minimum tightening torque when installing the pinion yoke retaining nut at this point. Failure to heed caution may result in damage

  5. Install pinion washer and a new nut on the pinion gear shaft.
    NOTE
    Tighten nut only enough to remove the shaft end play.

  6.  
  7. Tighten pinion nut to 160 ft. lbs. (217 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Rotate pinion shaft using an inch pound torque wrench. Rotating torque should be equal to the reading recorded during removal, plus an additional 5 inch lbs. (0.56 Nm).
  10.  
  11. If rotating torque is low, use Spanner 6958, or equivalent, to hold the pinion yoke and tighten pinion shaft nut in 60 inch lbs. (6.8 Nm) increments until proper rotating torque is achieved.
  12.  
  13. Install propeller shaft with reference marks aligned.
  14.  
  15. Install brake rotors and calipers.
  16.  

261FBI Front Axle
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Mark the propeller shaft and pinion yoke for installation reference.
  4.  
  5. Remove propeller shaft from the yoke.
  6.  
  7. Rotate pinion gear three or four times and verify it rotates smoothly.
  8.  
  9. Remove pinion yoke nut and washer with Remover C-452 and Flange Wrench C-3281, or equivalent.
  10.  
  11. Remove pinion shaft seal with a pry tool or slide hammer mounted screw.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Apply a light coating of gear lubricant on the lip of pinion seal. Install seal with an appropriate installer.
  2.  
  3. Install yoke on the pinion gear with Installer W-162-D and Spanner Wrench 6958, or equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Install a new nut on the pinion gear and tighten the nut to 160-0 ft. lbs. (217-271 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Installation propeller shaft with reference marks aligned.
  8.  
  9. Check and add gear lubricant to axle if necessary.
  10.
