Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Position a hydraulic jack under the axle to support it.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front shocks at the lower mountings.
  10.  
  11. Remove the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wire mounting brackets at the axle, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove lower suspension arms mounting nuts and bolts from the frame.

  15. Remove the track bar from the axle bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the right side of the drag link from the right side knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Lower the axle until the spring is free from the upper mount.
    NOTE
    Rotation of the spring and prying down slightly on the axle will aid in removal.

  21. Remove the coil spring retainer clip and remove the spring.
  22.  
  23. Remove the upper spring isolator, if needed.
  24.  
  25. Pull jounce bumper out of mount, if needed.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install jounce bumper into mount.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring isolator.
    NOTE
    Rotation of the spring and prying down slightly on the axle will aid in installation.

  5. Position the coil spring on the axle pad. It may be necessary to rotate the spring while installing.
  6.  
  7. Install the spring retainer clip and bolt. Tighten bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Raise the axle into position until the spring seats in the upper mount.
  10.  
  11. Install the shock at the axle.
  12.  
  13. Install the ABS wire mounting brackets at the axle, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Install the track bar to the axle bracket. Torque to 40 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the lower suspension arms to the frame. Install mounting bolts and nuts finger tight.
  18.  
  19. Install the drag link to the right side knuckle. Torque to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Use new cotter pins.
  20.  
  21. Remove the hydraulic jack from under the axle
  22.  
  23. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  24.  
  25. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the lower suspension arms nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) at normal ride height with the vehicle weight.
  28.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shock.
  6.  
  7. Secure the shock assembly into a Pentastar Service Equipment W-7200 Spring compressor.
  8.  
  9. Compress the spring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock mount nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock from the spring compressor.
  14.  
  15. Transfer the necessary parts to the type of repair being done (Insulator, Spring, shock and mount).

To install:

  1. Install the shock to the spring and spring compressor, After the transfer of the necessary parts to the type of repair being done (Insulator, Spring, shock and mount).
  2.  
  3. Install the shock mounting nut. Tighten the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Loosen the compressed spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock assembly from the spring compressor.
  8.  
  9. Install the shock to the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
