Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper nut, washer and grommet from the upper stud
     
    Lower fasteners
     
    Shock absorber
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber. Torque the lower fasteners to 19 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Upper grommet, washer, and nut to the stud. Torque it to 16 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

The shock absorber and coil spring are removed as a unit.

Left Side
  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the battery.
  4.  
  5. Unclip the power center and move it to the side out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Remove the battery tray.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the battery temperature sensor from the battery tray.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four upper shock mounting nuts.
  12.  
  13. Raise and support the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower bolt at the lower control securing the clevis bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the stabilizer link.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
  22.  
  23. Separate the lower ball joint from the lower control arm using tool C-4150A.
  24.  
  25. Rotate the lower control arm downward to allow access.
  26.  
  27. Remove the clevis bracket at the shock.
  28.  
  29. Remove the shock assembly from the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the spring from the shock (if needed).

To install:

  1. Install the spring to the shock (if removed).
  2.  
  3. Install the shock assembly to the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the four upper shock mounting nuts. Tighten the nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the clevis bracket at the shock. Tighten the bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Raise the lower control into place and reconnect the lower ball joint nut. Tighten the nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the clevis bracket at the lower control arm. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower stabilizer link at the lower control arm. Tighten the bolt to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the left tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Reconnect the battery temperature sensor.
  20.  
  21. Install the battery tray.
  22.  
  23. Install the battery.
  24.  
  25. Reconnect the battery cables.
  26.  

Right Side
  1. Remove the air box.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two cruise control servo mounting nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper shock mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right side tire assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower bolt at the lower control securing the clevis bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer link.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
  16.  
  17. Separate the lower ball joint from the lower control arm using tool C-4150A.
  18.  
  19. Rotate the lower control arm downward to allow access.
  20.  
  21. Remove the clevis bracket at the shock.
  22.  
  23. Remove the shock assembly from the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the spring from the shock (if needed).

To install:

  1. Install the spring to the shock (if removed).
  2.  
  3. Install the shock assembly to the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the four upper shock mounting nuts. Tighten the nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the clevis bracket at the shock. Tighten the bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Raise the lower control into place and reconnect the lower ball joint nut. Tighten the nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the clevis bracket at the lower control arm. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower stabilizer link at the lower control arm. Tighten the bolt to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the right tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Install the cruise control servo mounting nuts.
  20.  
  21. Install the airbox.
  22.
