2.4L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  4.  
  5. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the belt tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Drain the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Remove the generator.
  14.  
  15. Remove the power steering pump.
  16.  
  17. Remove the A/C compressor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the accessory drive bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the timing belt.
  22.  
  23. Remove timing belt idler pulley.
  24.  
  25. Hold camshaft sprocket with Special tool C-4687 and adapter C-4687-1, or equivalent, while removing bolt. Remove both cam sprockets.
  26.  
  27. Remove the timing belt rear cover.
  28.  
  29. Remove water pump to engine attaching screws.
  30.  
  31. Replace water pump body assembly if it has any of these defects:
    1. Cracks or damage on the body.
    2.  
    3. Coolant leaks from the shaft seal, evident by wet coolant traces on the pump body.
    4.  
    5. Loose or rough turning bearing.
    6.  
    7. Impeller rubs either the pump body or the engine block.
    8.  
    9. Impeller loose or damaged.
    10.  
    11. Sprocket or sprocket flange loose or damaged.

To install:

  1. Install new O-ring gasket in water pump body O-ring locating groove.
    NOTE
    Make sure O-ring is properly seated in water pump groove before tightening screws. An improperly located O-ring may be damaged and cause a coolant leak.

  3. Assemble pump body to block and tighten screws to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Pressurize cooling system to 15 psi (103.4 Kpa) with pressure tester and check water pump shaft seal and O-ring for leaks.
  4.  
  5. Rotate pump by hand to check for freedom of movement.
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt rear cover.
  8.  
  9. Install camshaft sprockets and target ring. Torque bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (101 Nm) while holding camshaft sprocket.
  10.  
  11. Install timing belt idler pulley and torque mounting bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the timing belt.
  14.  
  15. Install the accessory drive mounting bracket.
  16.  
  17. Install the power steering pump.
  18.  
  19. Install the generator.
  20.  
  21. Install the A/C compressor.
  22.  
  23. Install the belt tensioner.
  24.  
  25. Install the accessory drive belts.
  26.  
  27. Fill the cooling system.
  28.  
  29. Lower vehicle and connect battery cable.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Drain cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove camshaft sprockets and rear timing belt cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove screws attaching water pump to engine. Remove pump.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Apply Mopar® Dielectric Grease, or equivalent, to new O-ring before installation.
  2.  
  3. Install O-ring gasket in water pump body groove.
    WARNING
    Make sure O-ring gasket is properly seated in water pump groove before tightening screws. An improperly located O-ring may cause damage to the O-ring, resulting in a coolant leak.

  4.  
  5. Assemble pump body to block and tighten screws to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Rotate pump by hand to check for freedom of movement.
  8.  
  9. Fill cooling system. Pressurize cooling system to 15 psi (103 Kpa) with pressure tester and check water pump shaft seal and O-ring for leaks.
  10.  
  11. Install rear timing belt cover and camshaft sprockets.
  12.  
  13. Install timing belt.
  14.  

2.8L Diesel Engine



  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove timing belt inner and outer covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove water pump retaining bolts and pump .
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean mating surfaces of water pump housing and engine block as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Place new O-ring in groove in water pump housing. Install water pump and retaining bolts. Torque bolts to 24.4 Nm.
  4.  
  5. Install both inner and outer timing belt covers.
  6.  
  7. Refill cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Connect negative battery cable.
  10.  

3.7L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan and clutch assembly from the pump
     
    Fan shroud and fan assembly. If you-re reusing the fan clutch, keep it upright to avoid silicone fluid loss!
     
    Lower hose
     
    Water pump (8 bolts)

  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the bolts, in sequence, to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).

4.0L Engine




NOTE
The 4.0L engines covered use a reverse rotation water pump. The letter R is stamped on the impeller to identify. Engines from previous years may be equipped with forward rotation water pumps. Installation of the wrong water pump will cause engine over heating.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Some 4.0L engines are equipped with a fan clutch that threads directly on to the water pump shaft. This fan clutch is equipped with right-hand threads.


    NOTE
    Do not store the fan clutch assembly horizontally, silicone may leak into the bearing grease and cause contamination.


    NOTE
    One of the water pump bolts is longer than the others. Note the location for reassembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Electric cooling fan connector
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Engine cooling fan and pulley
     



    Water pump pulley
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Lower radiator hose from the water pump
     
    Heater hose
     
    Water pump and discard the gasket

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of all gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Heater hose
     
    Lower radiator hose
     
    Water pump pulley. Torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Engine cooling fan and shroud. Torque the bolts to 31 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Electric cooling fan connector
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  8.
