Timing Chain Cover


Removal & Installation

4.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  3. Drain the engine oil and coolant.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery ground cable
    Both valve covers
    Radiator and the transmission cooler
    Drive belt
    Water pump
    CMP sensor
    Upper radiator hose bracket
    EGR vacuum regulator solenoid
    Drive belt tensioner
    Idler pulleys
    Crankshaft pulley
    Coolant hose clamps
    CKP sensor
    Oil pan to front cover bolts
    Crankshaft front oil seal
    Timing cover bolts and studs
    Front cover from the cylinder block


To install:

If the engine front cover is not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner.

  1. Apply silicone gasket and sealant along the cylinder head to block surface and the oil pan to cylinder block surface.
  3. Install the engine front cover on the front cover to cylinder block dowel and loosely install the bolts.
  5. Tighten the front cover bolts and stud bolts in the sequence shown.

  7. Install a new crankshaft front oil seal.
  9. Loosely install the pan-to-cover bolts, then, tighten the bolts in two stages, inner bolts first.

    Step 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
    Step 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees

  11. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
