    CAUTION
Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

    WARNING
Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.

    WARNING
Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) module can be damaged if exposed to these charges.

    WARNING
When installing a new ABS module or HCU, do not use the pump motor harness as a carrying handle. Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to the HCU assembly.

    WARNING
When disconnecting the brake lines, do not allow brake fluid to drip onto the ABS module or premature failure may occur.

    WARNING
Do not allow brake fluid to drip into the ABS module electrical connector cavity or premature failure may occur.

    1. Disconnect the battery.
    2.
    3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
      NOTE
The brake lines must be installed in the same location as removed.

    4.
    5. Remove the 4 brake line-to-HCU fittings.
    6.
    7. Remove the 2 HCU-to-bracket nuts and the HCU.
    8.
    9. Remove the ABS module. For additional information, refer to Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module in this section.
      NOTE
The HCU bracket does not have to be removed in order to complete this procedure.

    10.
    11. If necessary, remove the 3 HCU-bracket-to-frame bolts and the bracket.
    12.
    13. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Observe the following torques:

Brake line-to-HCU fittings: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)

HCU-to-bracket nuts and the HCU: 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.)

      CAUTION
The evaporative emissions system contains fuel vapor and condensed fuel vapor. Although not present in large quantities, it still presents the danger of explosion or fire. Disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery to minimize the possibility of an electrical spark occurring, possibly causing a fire or explosion if fuel vapor or liquid fuel are present in the area.

    4.
    5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the canister, if equipped.
    6.
    7. Disconnect the clamp and remove the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge outlet tube.
