Ignition Coil

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Remove the accelerator and cruise control cables from the bracket, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the Ignition Control Module (ICM).
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil housing retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coil housing from the camshaft cover.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil housing to the camshaft cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coil housing retaining bolts and tighten the retaining bolts to 89 lb inches (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the ICM.
  6.  
  7. Install the accelerator and cruise control cables bracket.
  8.  
  9. Install the accelerator and cruise control cables bracket bolts and tighten the retaining bolts to 89 lb inches (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the accelerator and cruise control cables to the bracket.
  12.  

3.1L Engine
  1. Disconnect the spark plug wires. Note the position from which the wires are removed.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two screws securing the ignition coil to the ignition control module.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil.
    NOTE
    Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the 2 attaching screws, and tighten the screws to 40 lb inches (4.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the spark plug wires.
  6.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Note the position of the spark plug wires for the installation and disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil and module assembly.

  3. Remove the four screws securing the ignition coil and module assembly to the bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil and module assembly.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil and module assembly to the bracket.
    NOTE
    Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   3. Install the ignition coil and module assembly screws, and tighten the screws to 40 lb inches (4.5 Nm).

  5. Connect the spark plug wires as noted during the removal.
