Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Remove the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flywheel bolts, and note the position of the flywheel to the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel.

To install:

  1. Position the flywheel on the crankshaft as previously noted.
    NOTE
    Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the flywheel bolts, and tighten the flywheel bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm) plus 25 degrees.
  4.  
  5. Install the transmission

3.1L Engine
  1. Remove the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flywheel attaching bolts. Use a suitable tool in order to prevent crankshaft rotation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel spacer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flywheel.
  8.  
  9. Clean the flywheel bolt threads and the bolt holes.

To install:

  1. Apply thread locker to all of the flywheel bolts. Use GM P/N 12345382 or an equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Install the flywheel.
  4.  
  5. Install the flywheel spacer.
    NOTE

  7. Install the flywheel bolts, and tighten the flywheel bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).

  9. Install the transmission.

3.5L Engine
  1. Remove the automatic transaxle.

  5. Loosen the 6 flywheel bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove 5 of the 6 flywheel bolts leaving one bolt at the top of the crankshaft rotation.

  9. Grip the flywheel and remove the remaining bolt. Do not drop the flywheel when removing the final bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine flywheel retainer and the flywheel.
  12.  
  13. Clean the engine flywheel bolt threads and bolt holes.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the flywheel and the flywheel retainer.
  2.  
  3. Use the special tool J37096 to secure the flywheel in order to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.
  4.  
  5. Install the engine flywheel bolts, and tighten the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Measure the flywheel runout:

  9. Install a dial indicator on the engine block and inspect the engine flywheel runout at 3 attaching bosses.
  10.  
  11. If the condition cannot be corrected, replace the engine flywheel.
  12.  
  13. Install the automatic transaxle.
  14.
