Oil Pump

Inspection



  1. Clean all parts of sludge, oil, and varnish by soaking in cleaning solvent.
  2.  
  3. Inspect for foreign material and determine the source of the foreign material.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the pump housing and cover for the following conditions:

    Cracks or casting imperfections
     
    Scoring
     
    Damaged threads
     

  6.  
  7. Do not attempt to repair the pump housing. Replace the pump housing.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the oil pump gears for the following conditions:

    Scoring
     
    Excessive wear
     

  10.  
  11. Inspect the idler shaft for looseness or scoring. If loose or damaged, replace the oil pump.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the drive gear shaft for looseness or scoring.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the pressure regulator valve for the following conditions:

    Scoring
     
    Sticking Burrs may be removed using a fine oil stone
     

  16.  
  17. Inspect the pressure regulator valve spring for the following conditions:

    Loss of tension
     
    Bending
     

  18.  
  19. Inspect the suction pipe and screen assembly for the following conditions:

    Looseness If the suction pipe is loose, bent or has been removed, replace the pump body cover and suction pipe.
     
    Broken wire mesh or screen
     

  20.  
  21. Measure the oil pump gear lash. Install the gears, and measure in several places.
  22.  
  23. Measure the oil pump housing gear pocket.
  24.  
  25. Measure the oil pump gears .
    NOTE
    When deciding pump serviceability based on end clearance, consider depth of the wear pattern in the pump cover.

  27. Measure the oil pump gear side clearance.

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    The oil pump is part of the engine front cover assembly.

  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front cover
     
    Pressure relief valve from front cover
     
    Oil pump cover
     
    Oil pump

To install:


NOTE
If the oil pump is to be replaced, the entire front cover must also be replaced.


NOTE
Lubricate all oil pump parts with clean engine oil.

  1. Install the inner gear into the outer gear.
  2.  
  3. Install the assembly together into the front cover the hub of the center gear facing the front cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump cover. Tighten the bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the pressure relief valve. Tighten the plug to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the front cover.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    The oil pump is part of the engine front cover assembly.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front cover
     
    Pressure relief valve from front cover
     
    Oil pump cover
     
    Oil pump

To install:


NOTE

3.1L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan
     
    Crankshaft oil deflector
     
    Oil pump and pump driveshaft

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and pump driveshaft. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Crankshaft oil deflector. Torque the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
     
    Oil pan. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) and the side bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the crankcase.
    NOTE
    A filter change is recommended.

  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check the oil pressure and check for leaks.
  6.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil pump bolt
     
    Oil pump and the oil pump drive shaft
     

  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Rotate the oil pump drive shaft as necessary to mate with the oil pump drive unit.

  1. Install the oil pump drive shaft and oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the oil pump bolt to 30 ft. lbs (41 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Lower vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.  

3.9L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump and the oil pump drive shaft.
    NOTE
    Rotate the oil pump drive shaft as necessary in order to obtain the engagement with the oil pump drive unit.

  12.  
  13. Install the oil pump drive shaft and the oil pump.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pump bolt and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the oil pan.
  18.  
  19. Lower vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  24.
