Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower control arm to rear bushing bolt.
  10.  
  11. Note the position of the bushing during removal. Remove the bushing off the lower control arm.

  13. Install the bushing on the lower control arm as previously noted.
  14.  
  15. Using Locktite® 234 or equivalent on the bolt threads, install the lower control arm to bushing bolt.
  16.  
  17. Hold the rear bushing inner sleeve when tightening the rear bushings to control arm bolt. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

Front Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm and place it in a vise.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the threads of Screw J-21474-19 with high pressure lubricant.
  6.  
  7. Assemble Tools Screw J-21474-19, Remover/Installer J-41397-1A, Receiver J-41397-2A and J-21474-18 onto the front control arm bushing.
  8.  
  9. Tighten Tool J-21474-18 until the front bushing is pressed from the control arm.
  10.  
  11. Disassemble the tools.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new front bushing outer casing.
  2.  
  3. Insert the new bushing into the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Assemble Tools Screw J-21474-19, Remover/Installer J-41397-1A, Receiver J-41397-2A and J-21474-18 onto the front control arm bushing.
  6.  
  7. Tighten Screw J-21474-19 until the front bushing is pressed into the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Disassemble the tools.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower control arm.
  12.  

Rear Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm and place it in a vise.
  4.  
  5. Assemble Tools Screw J-21474-27, Remover/Installer J-41211-1, Receiver J-41211-3 and J-21474-4 onto the rear control arm bushing.
  6.  
  7. Tighten Tool J-21474-27 until the rear bushing is pressed from the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Disassemble the tools.

To install:

  1. Insert the new bushing into the control arm.
  2.  
  3. Assemble Tools Screw J-21474-27, Remover/Installer J-41211-1, Receiver J-41211-3 and J-21474-4 onto the rear control arm bushing.
  4.  
  5. Tighten Screw J-21474-4 until the rear bushing is pressed into the control arm.
  6.  
  7. Disassemble the tools.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower control arm.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower control arm rear bushing bolt.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the position of the bushing on the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the control arm bushing.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the bushing on the control arm.
  2.  
  3. Using Loctite® or equivalent, install the lower control arm-to-bushing bolt and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm.
  6.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer shaft link
     
    Lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower control arm-to-suspension crossmember bolts
     
    Lower control arm

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm-to-suspension crossmember and hand-tighten the bolts
     
    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Torque the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer shaft link. Torque the nut to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
     
    Front wheel

  3. Position the vehicle at curb height.
  4.  
  5. Torque the bolts as follows:
    1. Front lower control arm-to-suspension crossmember bolt to 84 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) plus an additional 120 degrees.
    2.  
    3. Rear lower control arm-to-suspension crossmember bolt to 180 ft. lbs. (245 Nm) plus an additional 180 degrees.

  7. Check and/or adjust the front alignment.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with a 3.5L engine:
    1. If removing the left lower control arm, remove the side transmission mount.
    2.  
    3. If removing the right lower control arm, remove the engine mount.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm front bushing-to-frame bolt
     
    Lower control arm rear bushing-to-frame bolts
     
    Lower control arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt, noting its original position.
     
    Ball stud from the steering knuckle
     
    Control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Position the lower control arm to the frame assembly and steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
  4.  
  5. Install a new lower control arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt to its original position. Hand tighten only.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower control arm front bushing-to-frame bolt. Hand tighten only.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower control arm rear bushing-to-frame bolt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten components as follows:
    1. Tighten the ball stud-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Reverse the nut 3 / 4 of a turn and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus 60 degrees.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolts with the front suspension loaded using a jackstand.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the front bushing bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the rear bushing bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    8.

  13. If equipped with a 3.5L engine:
    1. Install the side transmission mount if removed. Tighten bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the engine mount if removed. Tighten bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    4.

  15. Install the front wheel.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with a 3.5L engine:
    1. If removing the left lower control arm, remove the side transmission mount.
    2.  
    3. If removing the right lower control arm, remove the engine mount.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm front bushing-to-frame bolt
     
    Lower control arm rear bushing-to-frame bolts
     
    Lower control arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt, noting its original position.
     
    Ball stud from the steering knuckle
     
    Control arm

To install:

  1. Position the lower control arm to the frame assembly and steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

  5. Install a new lower control arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt to its original position. Hand tighten only.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower control arm front bushing-to-frame bolt. Hand tighten only.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower control arm rear bushing-to-frame bolt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten components as follows:
    1. Tighten the ball stud-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Reverse the nut 3 / 4 of a turn and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus 60 degrees.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolts with the front suspension loaded using a jack stand.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the front bushing bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the rear bushing bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
