Electronic Power Steering



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the SIR coil assembly. Secure SIR coil assembly from turning.
  10.  
  11. Remove the multifunction turn signal.
  12.  
  13. Remove the multifunction turn signal switch housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering column knee bolster.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering column shaft pinch bolt from the intermediate steering shaft.
  18.  
  19. Install tie straps (1) between the rake bracket assembly (2) and the neck of the assist mechanism housing (3) to prevent jacket assembly pull-apart. The steering column rake lever MUST be in the LOCK (FULL UP) position during steering column removal and installation to ensure that the rake lever bracket remains rigid. Install a tie strap around the lever and the jacket assembly to keep the lever in the LOCK position. Do not bend the steering column energy absorbing straps located on the upper steering column mounting bracket.

  21. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors open the steering column wire harness retainer clip.
  22.  
  23. Remove the adjustable pedal bracket assembly and reposition leaving the brake pedal cable and motor attached, if vehicle is equipped with adjustable pedals.

  25. Remove the upper steering column mounting bolts.

  27. Remove the lower steering column mounting bolt.
    WARNING
    Once the steering column is lowered, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Leaning on or pushing down on the column will result in damage to the intermediate shaft boot seal and could cause the jacket to bend of deform.

  29. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. If replacing the column, remove the motor/module assembly from the steering column.
  32.  

To install:

  1. If removed, install the motor/module assembly to the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Position the steering column in the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Slide the lower end of the steering column shaft into the intermediate steering shaft.
  6.  
  7. Loosely install the lower steering column mounting bolt .
  8.  
  9. Loosely install the upper steering column mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Align the energy absorbing straps with the bolt holes in the steering column. Loosely install the upper steering column bolts.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the steering column fasteners in the following sequence:

    Tighten the lower bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Tighten the left side upper bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Tighten the right side upper bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

  15. Connect the steering column electrical connectors and close the wire harness retainer clip on the steering column.
  16.  
  17. Remove the tie strap (1) from between the rake lever bracket assembly (2) and the neck of the assist mechanism housing (3).
  18.  
  19. Remove the wire strap from around the rake lever and the jacket assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install the adjustable pedal bracket assembly, if equipped with adjustable pedals.
  22.  
  23. Install the steering column knee bolster.
  24.  
  25. Install the multifunction turn signal switch housing.
  26.  
  27. Install the multifunction turn signal.
  28.  
  29. Install the SIR coil assembly.
  30.  
  31. Install the steering wheel.
  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
  34.  
  35. Enable the SIR system.
  36.  
  37. Perform the control module setup.
  38.  
  39. Install an approved scan tool, select special functions.
  40.  
  41. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  42.  
  43. Center the steering wheel.
    NOTE
    After centering the steering wheel, remove hands and other objects from the steering wheel and ensure the suspension is relaxed and no bias, or uneven force is being applied to the steering system.

  45. Select the appropriate calibration function:

    Steering position sensor calibration
     
    Torque sensor calibration
     
    Steering tuning selection

  47. The scan tool screen will flash Calibration in Progress then display Calibration Complete.
  48.  
  49. Press the exit key.
  50.  
  51. Use the scan tool in order to clear any steering DTCs
    NOTE
    After turning OFF the ignition, allow 25 seconds of wait time before performing any procedures that require the vehicles battery to be disconnected, or module memory loss may occur.

  53. Turn OFF the ignition.
  54.  
  55. Inspect all of the steering column components for correct operation.

Hydraulic Power Steering



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system.

  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the SIR coil assembly. Secure SIR coil assembly from turning.
  10.  
  11. Remove the multifunction turn signal.
  12.  
  13. Remove the multifunction turn signal switch housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering column knee bolster.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering column shaft pinch bolt from the intermediate steering shaft.
  18.  
  19. Install tie straps (1) between the rake bracket assembly (2) and the base of the steering column to prevent jacket assembly pull-apart. The steering column rake lever MUST be in the LOCK (FULL UP) position during steering column removal and installation to ensure that the rake lever bracket remains rigid. Install a tie strap around the lever and the jacket assembly to keep the lever in the LOCK position. Do not bend the steering column energy absorbing straps located on the upper steering column mounting bracket.

  21. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors open the steering column wire harness retainer clip.
    NOTE
    DO NOT disconnect the adjustable brake pedal cable.

  23. Remove the adjustable pedal bracket assembly and reposition leaving the brake pedal cable and motor attached, if vehicle is equipped with adjustable pedals.

  25. Remove the upper steering column mounting bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lower steering column mounting bolt.
  28.  
  29. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.

To install:


WARNING
Do not bend the steering column energy absorbing straps located on the upper steering column mounting bracket during installation.

  1. Position the steering column in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Slide the lower end of the steering column shaft into the intermediate steering shaft.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the lower steering column mounting bolt .
  6.  
  7. Loosely install the upper steering column mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Align the energy absorbing straps with the bolt holes in the steering column. Loosely install the upper steering column bolts .
  10.  
  11. Tighten the steering column fasteners in the following sequence:

    Tighten the lower bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Tighten the left side upper bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Tighten the right side upper bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     

  12.  
  13. Connect the steering column electrical connectors and close the wire harness retainer clip on the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Remove the tie strap from the steering column.
  16.  
  17. Remove the wire strap from around the rake lever and the jacket assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the adjustable pedal bracket assembly, if equipped with adjustable pedals.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering column knee bolster.
  22.  
  23. Install the multifunction turn signal switch housing.
  24.  
  25. Install the multifunction turn signal.
  26.  
  27. Install the SIR coil assembly.
  28.  
  29. Install the steering wheel.
  30.  
  31. Connect the negative battery cable.
  32.  
  33. Enable the SIR system.
  34.  
  35. Inspect all of the steering column components for correct operation.
