Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine drive belt.

  5. Use special tool J38122-A to prevent the crankshaft from rotating while loosening the crankshaft balancer bolt

  7. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt. Discard the bolt.

  9. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft balancer.
  2.  
  3. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt.
  4.  
  5. Use special tool J38122-A to prevent the crankshaft from rotating while tightening the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 75 degrees.
  6.  
  7. Install the engine drive belt.
  8.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.

  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Install the jack stands to the frame.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the left frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts.
  14.  
  15. Using the jack stands, lower the right side of the frame to access the crankshaft balancer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the torque converter covers.
  18.  
  19. Install the special tool J37096 to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.

  23. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Use the special tool J41816.

To install:

  1. Apply sealant GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or the equivalent to the keyway of the balancer.

  3. Install the crankshaft balancer. Use the special tool J29113.
  4.  
  5. Remove the special tool J29113.
  6.  
  7. Install the special tool J37096 to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.
  8.  
  9. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and the bolt, and tighten the bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove the special tool J37096 from the flywheel.
  12.  
  13. Install the torque converter covers.
  14.  
  15. Raise the frame to the original position.
  16.  
  17. Install and tighten the frame bolts.
  18.  
  19. Install the right engine splash shield.
  20.  
  21. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Install the drive belt.
  26.  

3.9L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.

  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Install adjustable jack stands under the frame.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the left side frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts.
  14.  
  15. Using the jack stands, lower the right side of the frame in order to access the crankshaft balancer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the torque converter covers.
  18.  
  19. Install the J 37096 to the flywheel in order to prevent flywheel rotation.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and the washer.
    WARNING
    Do NOT use a power-assisted tool with the special tool in order to remove or install this component. You cannot properly control the alignment of this component using a power-assisted tool, and this can damage the component.

  22.  
  23. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J 41816 and EN 46359.
