On 1978-83 vehicles with power steering, check the fluid level every 7,500 miles (12,077 km) and fill as necessary. On 1984-89 vehicles, check the fluid level every 15,000 miles (24,155 km) and fill as necessary.
Power steering systems use Dexron®II, M2C33 or equivalent ATF.
Check the power steering pump level while the fluid is cold.
If there are level indicator markings on the level gauge, make sure that they are facing the front of the vehicle while checking the fluid level. Some level gauges will just have two raised bulges on the gauge.
Remove the level gauge from the power steering pump, and check that the fluid level is within the range of the H and L marks. Wipe the gauge clean and check it again. If not, add fluid until the level is at the (upper) H mark. On 1988-89 626 and MX-6 models, the fluid level should be between the MIN and MAX marks on the translucent reservoir.
