Only 323s with 4-wheel drive (4WD) are equipped with transfer carriers. Under "normal" operating conditions, the oil in the transfer carrier should be replaced every 60,000 miles (96,618 km).
Use API GL-5 oils: SAE 90 above 0°F (-18°C) and SAE 80W below 0°F (-18°C).
Check the fluid level in the transfer carrier a least once a year. To check the oil level, make sure the vehicle is on level ground and then remove the fill/check plug. The fluid level should be just below the plug opening. Add the proper amount of oil as necessary and install the fill/check plug.
DRAIN AND REFILL
See Figures 1 and 2
- Remove the fill/check plug on the side of the transfer carrier, using a proper size socket or open end wrench.
- Position a drain pan under the carrier and remove the drain plug, using a proper size socket or open end wrench. Drain the carrier, then reinstall the drain plug.
- Add 0.53 qt. (0.50 liter) of the appropriate fluid through the fill/check opening, using a turkey baster or equivalent syringe type pump.
- Reinstall the fill/check plug and remove the drain pan.
