SYSTEM OPERATION

There are 3 crash sensors mounted in the front of the vehicle. There is another sensor mounted in the passenger compartment of the vehicle which monitors the deceleration rate of the vehicle upon collision. When any of the crash sensors and the deceleration sensor are simultaneously activated, the air bag will be deployed. The air bag system does contain a warning lamp which will illuminate and stay lit if there is a problem within the system. The complete air bag system is controlled by the diagnostic module unit. The module unit contains a diagnostic feature which will display a coded warning lamp display when trouble does exist.

SYSTEM PRECAUTIONS

  1. Before replacing any air bag component, disconnect the negative battery cable and disconnect the orange and blue clockspring electrical connector, located below the steering wheel.
  2.
  3. The air bag components are not intended to be disassembled. They should be replaced if they are defective.
  4.
  5. The air bag wiring harness should never be repaired, if it is defective it must be replaced.
  6.
  7. Never use an ohmmeter to test the air bag module. Doing so could accidentally deploy the air bag.
  8.
  9. When carrying a live undeployed air bag module, carry it so that the trim cover is pointing away from your body at all times.
  10.
  11. When placing a live undeployed air bag on a flat surface, make certain to face the trim cover upward at all times.
  12.
  13. In the event that the air bag has been deployed, always wear gloves and safety glasses to handle the air bag assembly. The air bag may contain caustic material deposits.
  14.
  15. Because of the content of the air bag assembly, a deployed unit must be properly disposed of.
  16.
  17. The position of the crash sensors in the front end is very important, if the front end ever suffers any damage of any type, the sensors must be inspected.
  18.
  19. If the steering wheel is ever removed, the air bag clockspring connector must be adjusted.
  20.
