TESTING

2.3L Engine

Because the ignition control module is integrated with the ignition coil, it is difficult to simply test the coil assembly itself. Refer to the ignition coil spark test given earlier in this section.

1998 2.0L and 2.5L (except Millenia) Engines
PRIMARY COIL WINDING RESISTANCE

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Detach the coil pack wire harness connector.
  2.
  3. On 2.0L engines, measure the resistance between the terminals as follows:
    1. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals A and B and record the reading.
    2.
    3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals C and B and record the reading.

    4.

  4.
  5. On 2.5L engines, measure the resistance between the terminals as follows:
    1. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals A and D and record the reading.
    2.
    3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals B and D and record the reading.
    4.
    5. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals C and D and record the reading.
    6.

  6.
  7. The resistance specification is 0.45-0.55 ohms at 68°F (4°C).
  8.
  9. If any of the readings are not within specification, replace the coil pack.
  10.

SECONDARY COIL WIRE RESISTANCE

See Figures 3 and 4

  1. Label and detach the spark plug wires from the coil pack.
  2.
  3. On 2.0L engines, measure the resistance between the spark plug terminals as follows:
    1. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals 1 and 4 and record the reading.
    2.
    3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals 2 and 3 and record the reading.

  4.
  5. On 2.5L engines, measure the resistance between the spark plug terminals as follows:
    1. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals 1 and 4 and record the reading.
    2.
    3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals 2 and 5 and record the reading.
    4.
    5. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals 3 and 6 and record the reading.
    6.

  6.
  7. The resistance specification is 11.5-15.5k ohms at 68°F (4°C).
  8.
  9. If any of the readings are not within specification, replace the coil pack.
  10.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

2.3L Engine

See Figures 5 and 6

  1. For the front bank of spark plugs, remove the charge air cooler.
  2.
  3. For the rear bank of spark plugs, remove the solenoid bracket assembly.
  4.

  1. Detach the ignition coil 4-pin connector.
  2.
  3. Remove the ignition coil attaching screws and remove the coil by pulling it straight up.
  4.

To install:
  1. Inspect the coil-to-spark plug connection area for cracks or damage. If damage to the coil is found, replace the assembly.
  2.
  3. Position the ignition coil over the spark plug and press it down firmly to ensure full engagement.
  4.
  5. Align the mounting holes and install the coil attaching screws. Tighten the screws to 40-57 inch lbs. (4.5-6.4 Nm).
  6.
  7. Attach the ignition coil 4-pin connector.
  8.
  9. For the front bank of spark plugs, lubricate the sealing washers and install the charge air cooler. Tighten the attaching nuts to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-6 Nm).
  10.
  11. For the rear bank of spark plugs, install the solenoid bracket assembly.
  12.

1998 2.0L and 2.5L (except Millenia) Engines

See Figures 7 and 8

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. As necessary for clearance, remove the air intake ducting.
  4.

  1. Label and disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil pack.
  2.
  3. Detach the electrical wire harness plug from the coil pack.
  4.
  5. Remove the four coil pack-to-mounting bracket attaching bolts and remove the coil.
  6.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the attaching bolts to 43-60 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm).
