1995-98 1.5L and 1.8L (except K8) Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.
  5. Remove the upper seal board and radiator grille.
  6.
  7. Remove the hood safety lever.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the coolant reservoir and upper and lower radiator hoses. If equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect the oil cooler lines and plug the hoses.
  10.
  11. Disconnect the electric cooling fan connector.
  12.
  13. Remove the shroud (cowling) mounting bolts, and remove the shroud from the radiator. Move the assembly to the side of the engine to gain clearance space.
  14.
  15. Remove the radiator brackets.
  16.
  17. Lift and remove the radiator from the vehicle.
  18.
  19. Remove the cooling fan from the vehicle. Remove the mounting nut, and remove the fan blade from the fan motor.
  20.
  21. Remove the mounting bolts, and remove the fan motor from the shroud.
  22.

To install:
  1. Position the fan motor on the shroud and install the mounting bolts.
  2.
  3. Install the fan blade onto the fan motor. Apply a locking compound on the mounting nut, and install the mounting nut.
  4.
  5. Install the radiator, making sure the lower tank engages the insulators.
  6.
  7. Install the radiator brackets. Tighten the mounting bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the fan and shroud assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  10.
  11. Unplug and connect the cooler lines, if required.
  12.
  13. Reattach the wiring harness to the routing clips, and install the upper and lower radiator hoses to the radiator.
  14.
  15. Connect the overflow tube to the radiator, and connect the cooling fan wiring connector.
  16.
  17. Install the hood safety lever. Tighten the mounting bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  18.
  19. Install the radiator grille and upper seal board.
  20.
  21. Close the radiator drain valve and fill the system with coolant. Install the pressure cap to the first stop only.
  22.
  23. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and run it at fast idle until the upper radiator hose feels warm, indicating the thermostat has opened and coolant is flowing throughout the system.
  24.
  25. Stop the engine. Carefully remove the radiator cap and top off the radiator with coolant, if required.
  26.
  27. Install the radiator cap securely and fill the coolant reservoir to the FULL mark.
  28.
  29. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  30.

2.3L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.
  5. If equipped, remove the right-hand splash shield.
  6.
  7. If necessary, remove the charge air cooler.
  8.
  9. If necessary, remove the radiator grill.
  10.
  11. Remove the upper seal board.
  12.
  13. Disconnect the coolant reservoir hose. Remove the coolant reservoir.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connector.
  16.
  17. Remove the shroud (cowling) mounting bolts and remove the shroud from the radiator.
  18.
  19. Remove the mounting nut and remove the fan from the fan motor.
  20.
  21. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the fan motor from the shroud.
  22.

To install:
  1. Position the fan motor on the shroud and install the mounting bolts.
  2.
  3. Install the fan onto the fan motor. Apply a locking compound on the mounting nut, and install the mounting nut.
  4.
  5. Install the shroud onto the radiator.
  6.
  7. Connect the cooling fan electrical connector.
  8.
  9. Install the coolant reservoir. Connect the coolant reservoir hose.
  10.
  11. Install the upper seal board.
  12.
  13. If removed, install the radiator grill.
  14.
  15. If removed, install the charge air cooler.
  16.
  17. If equipped, install the right-hand splash shield.
  18.
  19. Properly fill the cooling system.
  20.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.

Except 1.5L, 2.3L and 1995-98 1.8L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  2.
  3. Remove the radiator.
  4.
  5. Remove the shroud mounting bolts and remove the shroud from the radiator.
  6.
  7. Remove the mounting nut and remove the fan from the fan motor.
  8.
  9. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the fan motor from the shroud.
  10.
  11. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  12.

TESTING

See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Detach the cooling fan wire harness connector.
  2.
  3. On two wire connectors (single speed fans), apply battery voltage to one of the terminals on the fan connector and ground the other one.
  4.

Fig. Fig. 3: Fan testing connections for four wire units (two speed fans)

  1. On four wire connectors (two speed fans), apply battery voltage to two terminals and ground the other two. This will check the high speed mode of the fan, to check the low speed connect the wires the same as two wire models.
  2.
  3. Attach an ammeter inline on the positive wire.
  4.
  5. The fan should operate, if not, replace the fan assembly.
  6.
  7. If the fan operates when battery voltage is applied, but not when connected to the vehicle, check the cooling fan relay and/or the engine coolant temperature sensor.
  8.
  9. While the fan is operating, the current draw should be as follows:
    1. Single speed fan: 2.6-7.6 Amps
    2.
    3. Two speed fan (low): 8.0-14.0 Amps
    4.
    5. Two speed fan (high): 11.5-17.5 Amps
    6.
