Rocker Arm (Valve) Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1.6L, 1.2L SOHC (except K2) and 2.2L Engines

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the vent hose from the rocker arm cover.
  2.

  1. Remove the PCV valve from the rocker arm cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plug wires from the wire clips.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rocker arm cover retaining bolts and remove the rocker arm cover and gasket.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Clean all old gasket material from the rocker arm cover and the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket onto the rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Apply silicone sealer around the groove of the cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the rocker arm cover on the cylinder head with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 43-6 inch lbs. (5-3 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the spark plug wires to the retaining clips and install the PCV valve. Connect the vent hose to the rocker arm cover.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
  12.  

1.5L, 1.2L DOHC (except K2) and 2.0L Engines

  1. As necessary, unbolt the power steering hose securing brackets from the valve cover. It may be necessary to remove the power steering pump in order to allow the hose enough range of motion to clear the valve cover.

  1. Label and remove the spark plug wires from the plugs.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the vent hose from the cover.

  1. Disconnect the PCV hose from the cover.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the cover bolts evenly over three steps.
  4.  
  5. Remove the valve cover bolts, keeping them in order. Some bolts are longer than others and should be returned to their original locations.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cover from the engine.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean all old gasket material from the cover and the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket onto the cover.

  1. Apply silicone sealer to the shaded area of the cylinder head as shown in the figure.

  1. Install the cover on the cylinder head with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts in the order shown in fig33 to 52-63 inch lbs. (6-2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Connect the vent hose and the PCV hose to the cover.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
  6.  

1.2L DOHC (K2), 2.3L and 2.5L Engine

See Figures 15, 16, 17 and 18

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. On the 1.2L and 2.5L engines, remove the intake manifold stay bracket from the engine.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the vent hoses from the intake manifold and from the cover assembly.
  6.

  1. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs, make a note of plug wire original location.
  2.  
  3. On 2.3L engines and for rear valve cover removal on the 1.2L and 2.5L engines perform the following:
    1. Remove the intake manifold assembly from the engine.

  5. Remove the ventilation pipe attaching bolts and disconnect the pipe from the front cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cover bolts and remove the cover assembly.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Clean all old gasket material from the rocker arm cover and the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket onto the cover.
  4.  
  5. Apply silicone sealer to the cylinder head perimeter.
  6.

  1. Install the cover assembly and the bolts and tighten in the sequence shown over three steps to 43-6 inch lbs. (4.3-2.2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the ventilation pipe to the front cover assembly and tighten the bolts to 63-35 inch lbs. (1.2-5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. If removed, install a new gasket to the intake manifold assembly and install it to the engine. Loosely tighten the bolts and nuts.
  6.  
  7. On the 1.2L and 2.5L engines, install the intake manifold stay and tighten the bolts to 8-7 ft. lbs. (7-25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If necessary, tighten the intake manifold nuts and bolts over three stages to the proper specification.
  10.  
  11. Connect the vent hoses and connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.
  14.
