OIL LEVEL CHECK

Check the engine oil level every time you fill the gas tank. Make sure the oil level is between the F and L marks on the dipstick. The engine and oil must be warm and the vehicle parked on level ground to get an accurate reading. Also, allow a few minutes after turning off the engine for the oil to drain back into the pan before checking, or an inaccurate reading will result. Check the engine oil level as follows:

  1. Open the hood and locate the engine oil dipstick.
  2.  
  3. If the engine is hot, you may want to wrap a rag around the dipstick handle before removing it.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean, lint-free rag, then reinsert it into the dipstick tube. Make sure it is inserted all the way or an inaccurate reading will result.

  1. Pull out the dipstick and note the oil level. It should be between the marks, as stated above.
  2.  
  3. If the oil level is below the lower mark, replace the dipstick and add fresh oil to bring the level within the proper range. Do not overfill.
  4.  
  5. Recheck the oil level and close the hood.
  6.  

OIL & FILTER CHANGE

Mazda recommends changing the oil and filter on non-turbo equipped vehicles every 7,500 miles (12,000 km) and turbo equipped vehicles every 5,000 miles (8,000 km). However, due to the relatively low-cost, in addition to the added longevity of your engine, this service should be performed every 3,000 miles (4,800 km).

The engine oil and oil filter should be changed at the same time, at the recommended interval on the Maintenance Intervals chart. If the vehicle is being operated under extreme conditions or in very dusty areas, the oil should be changed more frequently. Before draining the oil, make sure the engine is at operating temperature. Hot oil holds more impurities in suspension and will flow better, allowing the removal of more oil and dirt.

Change the oil and filter as follows:

Mazda recommends replacing the oil pan drain plug sealing washer any time it is removed.

  1. Run the engine until it reaches the normal operating temperature.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.

  1. Wipe clean engine oil onto the rubber seal of the new oil filter. Also, if possible, pre-fill the filter with clean engine oil but note the following:
    1. If the filter is oriented vertically, with the seal facing upwards, fill the filter completely but use care when installing so as not to spill the oil and create a mess.
    2.  
    3. If the filter is oriented vertically, with the seal facing downwards, do not pre-fill the filter. There would be no way to keep the oil in the filter when you install it.
    4.  
    5. If the filter is oriented horizontally, only partially fill the filter. When you install the filter, some oil may start to spill out.

  3. Slide a drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  4.  
  5. Before sliding under the vehicle, also gather the needed tools (wrenches, filter wrench, etc.), the new oil filter and a couple of rags (just in case!).

CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer. You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

  1. Wipe the drain plug and the surrounding area clean. Loosen the drain plug with a socket or box wrench, and then remove it by hand. If necessary, use a rag to shield your fingers from the heat. Push in on the plug as you turn it out, so that oil does not leak out until the plug is completely removed.

  1. Allow the oil to drain into the pan. Be very careful; if the engine is at operating temperature, the oil is hot enough to burn you.
  2.  
  3. Clean and install the drain plug complete with a new drain plug washer. Tighten the drain plug to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Slide the drain pan under the oil filter. Slip an oil filter wrench onto the filter and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Wrap a rag around the filter and unscrew it the rest of the way. Be careful of oil running down the side of the filter.

  1. Clean the oil filter adapter on the engine with a clean rag.
  2.  
  3. Place the new filter in position on the adapter fitting and screw it on by hand. After the rubber gasket contacts the sealing surface, turn the filter 1 / 2 turn, by hand.
  4.  
  5. Pull the drain pan from under the vehicle and lower the vehicle to the ground.
  6.

  1. Remove the oil filler cap and fill the crankcase with the proper type and quantity of engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition to the ON position, but do not start the engine. Check the following:
    1. If equipped with an oil indicator lamp, ensure that the light is on.
    2.  
    3. If equipped with an oil pressure gauge, ensure that it is reading zero pressure or LOW (L).
    4.  
    5. If any of the above conditions are not met, DO NOT start the engine and repair the fault.
    6.

  5. On the turbocharged engine, it is necessary to pre-lube the lubricating system before starting the engine to ensure an adequate supply of oil to the turbocharger bearings. This is done as follows:
    1. Detach the ignition coil electrical connector from the ignition coil.
    2.  
    3. Crank the engine for approximately 20 seconds. Doing this will generate a fault code in the Self-Diagnostic portion of the Electronic Control Assembly.
    4.  
    5. Reattach the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Start the engine and run it at idle for approximately 30 seconds.
  8.  
  9. While the engine is running perform the following:
    1. If equipped with an oil indicator lamp, ensure that the light has gone out.
    2.  
    3. If equipped with an oil pressure gauge, ensure that it is reading within the normal zone.
    4.  
    5. Check the engine for any leaks.
    6.  
    7. If any of the above conditions are not met, stop the engine immediately and repair the fault.
    8.

  11. Stop the engine.
  12.  
  13. On the turbocharged engine, disconnect the negative battery cable and depress the brake pedal for approximately 5 seconds in order to cancel the fault code. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  15. Check and, if necessary, adjust the oil level.
