Combination Switch

The combination switch houses the controls for the headlights, turn signals and, on some models, wiper motor as well.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
Some models covered by this information may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Chassis Electrical . Always carry an air bag assembly, with the bag and trim cover, away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

1990-94 323, MX3 and 1990-97 Protege
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the horn cap.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 column cover screws and remove the cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electrical connections from the combination switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the combination switch as an assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Check the switch operation.

1995 MX3
  1. Remove the driver-side side and lower panels.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and disarm the air bag.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 column cover screws and remove the cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electrical connections from the combination switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the combination switch as an assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Check the switch operation.

1990-92 626/MX-6
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the horn cap.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 column cover screws and remove the cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electrical connections from the combination switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the combination switch as an assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Check the switch operation.

1993-98 626 and MX6
WITHOUT AIR BAG
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column covers.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stop ring from the shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the switch retaining screws. Remove the combination switch from its mounting.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

WITH AIR BAG
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disarm the air bag system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the driver-side side panel and lower panel. Disconnect the clock spring connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel and the column covers.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wiring and remove the screws for the combination switch. Remove the combination switch.
  8.  
  9. Installation of the switch is the reverse of removal. To install the steering wheel, the clock-spring must be reset:
    1. Make sure the front wheels are straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the clock-spring connector clockwise until it stops. Don't force it.
    4.  
    5. Turn the clock-spring back about 2.75 turns and align the marks on the clock spring connector to the marks on the outer housing.
    6.  
    7. Connect the wiring and install the steering wheel.

Millenia
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disarm the air bag.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air bag module and the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the electrical connectors and mounting screws, then remove the combination switch.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal.
