Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation



2.3L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     

  4.  


WARNING
Use care not to damage the engine front cover or the crankshaft when removing the seal.

To install:

  1. Using the special tool, install the crankshaft front oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the crankshaft damper in two stages:

    Step 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
     
    Step 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Use care not to damage the engine front cover or the crankshaft when removing the seal.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     



    Crankshaft front oil seal by prying the seal out of the front cover
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Using the special tool, install the crankshaft front oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the crankshaft damper in two stages:

    Step 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
     
    Step 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees
     

  6.  

2.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Drive belt
     

  4.  
  5. Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks and remove the timing belt.

    Crankshaft pulley center bolt and slide the pulley off of the crankshaft
     
    Crankshaft key
     

  6.  


WARNING
Do not damage the crankshaft sealing surface while removing the oil seal.



Crankshaft Seal Remover tool T74P-6700-B on the crankshaft and into the oil seal.
 
Oil seal and clean the seal journal
 

To install:

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the rubber lip of the new seal to aid installation.
  2.  
  3. Using Cam Bearing Adapter Tube T72C-6250, or equivalent, and crankshaft center bolt, carefully install the new oil seal until flush with the engine.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Key and crankshaft pulley, washer and bolt. Torque the bolt to 92-121 ft. lbs. (125-165 Nm).
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt and cover
     
    Drive belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Drive belt
     

  4.  
  5. Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks and remove the timing belt.
    WARNING
    Do not damage the crankshaft sealing surface while removing the oil seal.



    Crankshaft pulley center bolt and slide the pulley off of the crankshaft
     
    Crankshaft key
     



    Crankshaft Seal Remover tool T74P-6700-B on the crankshaft and into the oil seal.
     
    Oil seal and clean the seal journal
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the rubber lip of the new seal to aid installation.

  3. Using Cam Bearing Adapter Tube T72C-6250, or equivalent, and crankshaft center bolt, carefully install the new oil seal until flush with the engine.

  5. Install or connect the following:

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft front seal.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft front seal.
    1. Lubricate the seal lip with clean engine oil.
    2.  
    3. Using a seal installer, install the crankshaft front seal.
    4.

  3. Install the crankshaft damper.
  4.  

4.0L OHC Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     

  4.  
  5. Using a seal remover, remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
  6.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the seal lip with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Using a seal driver, install the crankshaft front oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  6.
