Removal & Installation

WARNING
Do not perform this procedure unless a new wheel hub nut and washer assembly and a new axle shaft circlip are available. Once removed, these parts must never be reused during assembly.

  1. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.
  7. Remove and discard the center wheel hub nut and washer.
  8.

WARNING
Never reuse the wheel hub nut and washer. This nut is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused.

  1. Remove the disc brake caliper and position it aside.
  2.

The hub shaft is a slip fit into the wheel hub and bearing; a press is not normally required.

  1. Ensure that the wheel hub shaft can be pushed inwards. If not, assemble a press to the front wheel studs and press the wheel hub shaft inwards slightly to break it loose.
  2.
  3. Place a jack under the lower control arm to support it.
  4.
  5. Remove the upper ball joint-to-steering knuckle retaining bolt and separate the joint from the knuckle.
  6.

WARNING
Support the steering knuckle and do not allow it to drop or swing downwards. This can overstress the CV-boot and joint, causing damage.

Fig. Pull the entire halfshaft from the vehicle

  1. Remove the outboard CV-joint from the wheel hub by slightly rotating the steering knuckle down, taking care not to overstress the joint or boot, and pulling the CV-joint out from the hub.
  2.
  3. Use a CV-joint puller and impact slide hammer to pull the inboard CV-joint from the axle housing. You can also use a prytool to carefully pry the CV-joint outward to disengage the internal circlip. Take care to not damage the axle housing seal.
  4.
  5. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle. Remove the circlip from the inboard CV-joint end and discard it.
  6.

To install:

  1. Install a new circlip to the inboard CV-joint end.
  2.
  3. Position the halfshaft into the vehicle. Slide the inboard CV-joint end into the axle housing until it is fully seated. Ensure that the circlip is engaged in the housing by attempting to pull the joint outwards.
  4.
  5. Install the outboard CV-joint end into the wheel hub.
  6.
  7. Position the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle and install the retaining bolt.
  8.
  9. Install the disc brake caliper back onto the rotor.
  10.
  11. Install a new wheel hub nut and washer and tighten to 157-213 ft. lbs. (212-288 Nm).
  12.
  13. Install the wheel and lug nuts.
  14.
  15. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
  16.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
Do not reuse the torque prevailing design hub nut and washer assembly.

    WARNING
Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard front wheel halfshaft joint from the wheel hub. Damage to the outboard CV joint stub shaft threads and internal CV joint components may result.

    Hub nut and washer assembly

Front disc brake caliper, anchor plate, and pads as an assembly, and position the assembly aside

    Brake disc

Outboard front wheel halfshaft joint from the wheel hub. Remove the special tool. Support the front suspension lower arm.

Nut and bolt retaining the upper ball joint to the front wheel knuckle

  6.
  7. Rotate the front wheel knuckle.
  8.
  9. Compress the outboard front wheel halfshaft joint.
  10.
  11. Remove the outboard front wheel halfshaft joint from the wheel hub.
  12.
  13. Using the special tools, separate the inboard front wheel halfshaft joint from the front axle housing.
    WARNING
Do not damage the axle seal.

  14.
  15. Remove the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle with both hands.
  16.
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Take note of the following:

Install the halfshaft with a new hub nut and washer assembly.

Do not use power or impact tools to tighten the hub nut and washer assembly.

Install a new retainer circlip in the groove in the LH inboard CV joint housing stub shaft before installing the halfshaft in the vehicle. To prevent the new retainer circlip from over-expanding when installing it, start one end in the groove and work the circlip over the shaft and into the groove.

Torque the hub nut to 162 ft. lbs. (220Nm).

  18.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, raise and support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.
    NOTE
Do not reuse the torque prevailing design hub nut and washer assembly.

  6.
  7. Remove and discard the hub nut and washer assembly.
    WARNING
Do not allow the disc brake caliper to hang suspended from the brake hose. Provide a suitable support.

  8.
  9. Remove the front disc brake caliper, anchor plate, and pads as an assembly, and position the assembly aside.
  10.
  11. Remove the brake disc.
    WARNING
Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard front wheel halfshaft joint from the wheel hub. Damage to the outboard CV joint stub shaft threads and internal CV joint components may result.

  12.
  13. Using the special tool, separate the outboard front wheel halfshaft joint from the wheel hub. Remove the special tool.
  14.
  15. Support the front suspension lower arm.
  16.
  17. Remove the nut and bolt retaining the upper ball joint to the front wheel knuckle.
  18.
  19. Rotate the front wheel knuckle.
  20.
  21. Compress the outboard front wheel halfshaft joint.
  22.
  23. Remove the outboard front wheel halfshaft joint from the wheel hub.
  24.
  25. Using the special tools, 205-241 and 100-001, or equivalent, separate the inboard front wheel halfshaft joint from the front axle housing.
  26.
  27. Remove the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle with both hands. Do not damage the axle seal.
  28.

To install:

WARNING
Install the halfshaft with a new hub nut and washer assembly. Do not use power or impact tools to tighten the hub nut and washer assembly.

NOTE
Install a new retainer circlip in the groove in the LH inboard CV joint housing stub shaft before installing the halfshaft in the vehicle. To prevent the new retainer circlip from over-expanding when installing it, start one end in the groove and work the circlip over the shaft and into the groove.
